Ok so it is located on the drivers side? i was looking at the temp sensor on the passenger side right by the oil filter. You have any idea what the correct reading should be? or what it should be in between? btw how much did you pick up a new one for?

They will be at the top of the engine compartment, near the valve cover. Look at the front of the valve cover then down and to the left slightly (pass side) for the sensors. They aren't expensive from a parts store; I think I spent somewhere around $13 for mine. I bought mine from Advance even though I hate buying parts from there. The FSM should say what it should be between; I forget off hand.

Like extreme22r and tried4x2 said I would be certain you had the timing set correctly.

Right again! It's been a while since I've seen a RE, but dang you saind it!

Try having a RTE!

I hate doing it so bad after a repower, I started a thread on what to set the valves at COLD, because I hate having to let it warm up and take the valve cover off just to adjust the valves!

sometimes I am a little unorthodox in my ways, but usually there is a reason.

Ok ill check those out thank you so much for your help, i do have one more question though. What exactly is the neutral start switch for? Can this affect if the engine starts or not? i hold the clutch down when i try to start the truck.

I am going to remove the valve cover because i have to replace the gasket anyways, so i can check if piston number one is in the compression stroke. I understand i have to time it after but it will start just run a little funny correct?

Yes, it can affect whether your truck starts or not. If it is broken or if you aren't pressing the clutch pedal the truck won't start unless you press the clutch start cancel switch on the dash. I don't have any experience with the Toyota switches but I did have to replace one in a Ford Focus my wife owned because I broke it off with my foot when I slipped off of the pedal.

Yeah it will run ok until you can time it with a gun if it is at O degrees.

assuming your close and on the right tooth and on the correct stroke, it will run. Sometimes even when the dizzy is 1 tooth off it will run.

if that switch under the clutch pedal is bad or the clutch start cancel switch is bad the engine will not even turn, as long as your starter is spinning these switches are good and will not affect the engine running.

Ok merfal i think i found those temp sensors you were talking about they are on the pass. side by the head. if they were off and you plugged them in you would plug them in going toward the firewall correct? and there are two of them side by side? it kinda looks like they are somehow part of the intake manifold?

Those would be them. If I remember correctly the one on the left is the CSI switch.

Hey man i did figure things out I tested the distributor and checked air gap that was fine, the ignition coil was fine so i put the distributor back in and tried starting it and the same thing was going on. I pulled the valve cover off to make sure piston number one was in its compression stroke. I pulled the timing chain just to see how tight it was and well i kept pulling until i was holding the entire chain in my hand. Turns out i have a broken timing chain
Ive never replaced a timing chain so hopefully you guys can help out along the way. Ive been dealing with a lot of cheap rebuilt engines the last 4runner i bought was a 3.slow with a rod knock the engine was suuuper clean and when i pulled the oil pan i found shards of the crankshaft journals. Also the guy i bought this 88 from said it was rebuilt as well, since the timing chain broke im just guessing it was a cheap ass kit. Know of any good kits out there?

I bought my timing kit from Engine Builder.
Engnbldr.com is the website if you want to check them out.
It's really not hard to do the timing chain and there are several good writeups on how to do it.
