I understand. My apologies as well - but the guy's just wrong. It may work on some vehicles, not ours.

the guy said to actually plug the whole and bypass the sensor, but he also mentioned that at one point he got so pissed with one of his cars that he removed the catalytic converter and replaced it with a straight pipe (which i dont want to do)
And that's the illegal part. In fact, tamping with the emissions system (which, by definition, could probably extend to the O2 sensor) is illegal at the federal level.

Well, the code talks about the cat system not working well. Again, from seeing other people go through this, it could be the O2 sensor or it could be the cat. In an earlier message PF says it's the O2 sensor... Given that this is a 95 and I bet with the original cat, then I'd switch out both.

Bank 1 is the O2 sensor in front. This is a 96 with the 3.4? Check URD:
http://www.urdusa.com/product_info.p...s_id=430006000

URD's $89 is a decent price, Lee pointed out that there are also other vendors here on YT. Drop a PM to a member named "strap22", he's been giving killer prices on stuff.

Do NOT replace the O2 sensor with a generic. It may seem that you can save money, but the Toyota gear REALLY wants to see an OEM (Denso) in there. People have tried generics and had nothing but weirdness.

sorry rabid I thought you said it wa a 95 not a 96 that is why I pointed to the TE1 and E1, yes it is OBDII. I see you got the code and I agree with Midi, changeout the O2 sensor. If you can't get a affordable replacment from one of the members here. You can get an OE one from www.sparkplugs.com.

That doesn't make a lot of sense... We're talking about 1 (one) octane point, right? 87 <-> 88?

When you switched gas, did you happen to move to something with more ethanol in it? Different gas station? Any chance for a ton of water in the tank?

I have been having the same problem.
99 4Runner Limited, v6.
Code is PO171. System Too Lean Bank 1.
Replaced the oxygen sensor with one I picked up from NAPA.
Plugs look good, checked throttle body and it was clean.
Code keeps coming back on. Am I missing something? Could it be another problem.
Truck runs fine and has 77k miles.

Be careful about using non OEM O2 sensors. You should only be running Denso's.

Past that...

Air filter, TPS, MAF, TB (you covered that though), fuel filter.. Did you search for what other folks have done?

Where are you in the world? (I'm asking to get an idea of elevation, weather, etc)
