If you do decide to go carbon fiber and want a bit more of a covert look I would look into candy painting it. They have different colors, but black is pretty easy and you will till be able to see the weave in the sunlight but you would have to really look. The only problem is your going to have to keep the rest of your truck all waxed up to match the new hood! There is a guy that just did a blue hood and it turned out pretty damn good. I have yet to see a black one, but if I decide to go CF, I would definitely wait until I had enough dime to paint it as well.

Austin... now that does not look so bad, but I still don't privy the checker pattern.
Jason... I don't think anyone was ever attacking you. Take advise and opinions for what they are worth and don't get so defensive. Make sure you post picks when you get your mods thrown on!

I think that the base black would work well for you Jason inasmuch as you've got a black 'Runner and clear coating it to make it really shiny would be alot less expensive than having it painted..., either way it's gonna look "hot" (as Paris Hilton would say).
p.s. I think that TRunner's just pissed because, in reality, he wanted to be the first one on here with a CF hood.

If you're worried about weight reduction, ditch your friends. J/k
I assume you want weight reduction for the purpose of getting going faster on the take off.
1. Remove spare tire and rack
2. Remove rear seat
3. Downsize your tires (it'll look poopy though)
4. Remove your grill guard
5. Remove your winch
6. Pull the sound equipment
7. Remove the carpeting
8. Go live in New York where your frame will rust away...that'll take off a few pounds
The only thing that would make sense to remove is the spare tire, if you don't travel very far from home. The 4runner is not a ricer and isn't designed to beat your buddy's vette.

well, if u really want speed out of all of this, swap in a chevy 350 or somethin. lol. cant beat that. unless of course u went with the viper v-10. but who does that? lmao.
now seriously, weight reduction, ditch the whole hood. hows that for creative? if u want to keep somethin on top, ceran wrap... hehehe

meh I agree that the scoop would (using the ram-air effect at higher speeds of course) lower the ambient temperature under the hood a bit and help out a bit by forcing the radiant heated air out underneath the truck. Which would keep the block cooler if ever so slightly. And a carbon fiber hood would look nice. I just believe it has its place. Me personally I would not go carbon fiber because if I am stuck in the mud I crawl over the door and across the hood to hook the tow strap up. (I dont like muddy carpet) Of course I am not implying that I get stuck often But what can you do with crappy A/T's

I dont care what anyone says, CF is cool as hell IF it was made properly.... Ditto for CF/Kevlar weaves or just straight kevlar! And yes I'd run every body panel being raw CF if I could! so HA!
Oh and im ALL ABOUT the WEIGHT REDUCTION! (I dont want to have to lift that heavy steel hood every time I change my oil!! LoL)

Its usually fiberglass with a top layer of carbon cloth for "looks".
IMHO Id rather PAINT the CF so it looks stock
My win the lottery ticket plan is to set up shop making a "composite" Gen1 4Runner body.. the whole thing. Including a new "lighter" topper. Interior panels will probalby be "skin bearing" as in somewhat stressed members. There would be "ribs" in the interior that would cover the steel tube "roll cage".
The structure would be panel bonded around the welded tube cage. Should be plenty strong and aroudn the same weight as stock with sound deadener etc. Wont need as much sound deadener as I think I can foam fill the interior betweent he panels - or at least spray the panels. Panels would be modular so that different tranny humps, gas tank, rear seats, rear shock towers, larger front wheel well tub, etc could be made/mounted.

If you get headers and have them powder coated and then did a hood scoop, you make get more air flow over and toward the back of the motor and down, but mostly from simply having the headers redirecting the exhaust down and away from the driver's side bank of the cylinders. It would also help on the HG issue.

You'll cool off the engine compartment with a scoop though...
With the way my exhaust gets red hot it would seem liek a scoop would be pretty beneficial. I'd still have paint on my hood if my truck came with a scoop from the factory.
I'd just worry about the water in there when it rained.
