CA smog test only victim.....

I want to know how many of us who live in CA with 95 and older didn't have to go to "test only" for smog check.
it seems to me that percentage of people who owned this type of vehicle that DMV sent to the "test only" station is pretty high....like 100%. So far, I don't know anyone with old vehicle that doesn't have to go to "test only" place for smog check. DMV claim that it's random but I dont' think so.

I don't know how to setup a pole thing so maybe one of you can do that for me....

Thanks

My 86 4runner is test only. I heard from somewhere that the vehicles that are the 15% worst polluters are required to go to test only.

You have to be at least a contributing member to start a pole.

"Test Only"? What's the alternative? Test + Inspection?

I just got done getting my 87 4runner smugged. I had to go to a Test Only station. And guess what it FAILED. So the guy at the Test only says nothing to me but go get it fixed and come back. What he should have said is " there are forms to fill out and send in to the state to receive a $500 credit to get the vehicle to pass smog. Because I was required to go to a test-only, it makes you eligible for financial assistance. No matter how much $ you make. I found this out via my mechanic that I've been going to for a long time. Its called the CAPP program and he's one of many stations that do the work for the state. After I mailed in the request forms it took a week and I got a letter back from the state OK-ing the $500. You do have to pay the first $100 than the state pays the rest up to $600 total. Change the EGR and it ended up passing and cost me $108 for the fix and certificate and the state had to pay out $153. The CAPP station does the repairs and testing so no need to go back to the test-only crap station. I thick the state sends people to the test-only in hopes that the vehicle fails and the owner just gunk the vehicle. So I say make the state pay!!!

I didn't have to smog it this year, I did smog my 89 ford and I didn't have to "test only". Knocking on wood for next year.

Every time I go to "test only" station, I pass. Still I have to go every time it comes up. Maybe it has to do with where I live also. It bugs me that I have to pay more for smog test. The "test only" station is about 50-60 bucks and the other is about 20-30 with coupon. I havent' found coupon for the " test only " yet....

what i did in my old rx7 days (they never pass smog) is get a po box in a town with less than 500 people and say you store your truck in that town, you will not have to smog you truck (it cost me $28 for a po box)

Where you live does have to do with smog rules. Where I live its a smog 2 area, which has stricture regs. The test-only I went do did have a coupon for $39.95 for the test, $8 for the certificate. So when I didn't pass it cost me the $39.95.

I'm glad I don't live in CA. I was there all last week and was bombarded with "Known to State of California to Cause Cancer, etc." signs. Even by the entrances to restaurants.

Haven't checked yet... but if no one has started a poll, I'll do so.

I just took my '85 in yesterday morning... it passed, best ever. The cat or egr have never been changed since I've owned it. The only thing I do is careful maintenance of fluids.. and I use an oil I have reason to trust.

Which was/is the secret on my Rx7 GSL-SE. That vehicle passes best of all of my vehicles. Don't list it below because I figure its not of general interest... I list the Volvo TD because I want Toyota to sell its Turbo Diesel is the US. Lucky Aussies...

Lastly, all of my vehicles (except the Turbo Diesel) require a Test Only every two years. They have always passed easily. I think in my case its the area within California that I'm in (Santa Clara County)... but I'll set up the poll, maybe we can figure it out.

Ok... poll is up under off-topics. Corey may or may not merge these two threads, which would be handy.
