Bad news for my 4runner.......
well, my mechanic called me this morning and told me what I didn't want to hear.....
rear end is gone....bearing went bad, gears are trashed.....
transmission input shaft bearing is making noise.....doesn't go into 4WD....
Would cost more than I want to spend to fix it now.......
it has just over 200,000 miles, it's a 95 SR5......
What do ya'll think.....should I buy a used chunk (I'm thinking about it),
and run it until the transmission goes.....?
At least I would save some money buying it and doing it myself....
or just sell it while it still runs....?
or part it out?
any opinions would be great, just don't want to have 2 car payments.....
Body is great, interior is in good shape.....
has been a good truck to have for the last 12 years......
sorry for the long post guys......

My vote is fix her...
you can pick up a new [to you] third member [diff] for not a lot of cash and install it yourself... as for the input bearing you might want to get it fixed before the tranny gets trashed all to heck [small money now vs. big money later] you could try to do the re & re on the tranny yourself which would make it cheaper just be careful those puppies are HEAVY...
just my 0.02 Prosit Aviator

I agree with aviator, fix the tranny and drop a new to you 3rd in her and all will be fine.
I am sure that between all of the Toy message boards, someone that has done a gear swap/parting out has a 3rd laying around taking up space that they will sell to you for a reasonable price. You might be able to score a tranny with less miles as well. Another idea is to pull the 3rd and contact "Zuk" he is a member here that does gears. http://www.gearinstalls.com/

i agree with fixing it. The rear end is super easy to replace. the tranny however will be a little more difficult (is it an auto BTW?). I'm sure you can find someone or a link to how to fix it yourself. Like aviator said, the A340H is very heavy.
My rear end went out recently due to the mechanic that installed my Detroit made the gears too tight and they ate each other up. Now hopefully I'll be getting a 3rd member tomorrow from FedEx with some fresh Motive 5.29s

if you want to run 4.10s I have a great rear 3rd and a front full a.d.d. set up Id let go go 200 plus shipping. Just pop your rear axels out and slide the rear in and your done then the front just drop the whole front unit and replace and your ready to go again.

What is involved in "Dropping the front unit?" I know how to do the rear, but have never even looked at the front really.......
Thanks, but I would like to stick to 4.88's with the 31's I have on it now....

I'd check your rear axle bearings to.. If the differential case was worn odds are the axle bearings are going as well.
and.. I cant imagine the drum brakes are to happy either.

Make sure your new replacement third member is the right gearing. Auto tranny's have different front and rear gears in the third members. prolly 430's or better. Not sure, 1st gen 4runner guy here.
I say fix it too. do the work yourself.

yep, the factory 4.88 with the rear end I can't put anything else in.....
I am taking it all apart Monday, and having new wheel bearings pressed on while I am waiting for the 3rd to come in......might as well do new brakes while I am at it.....and also new u-joints also.....
anything else
geez......guess I need to set aside a good day or so......who needs to work when you have vehicles at home....
