Attempting 25MPG w/ my 22RE

I get consistent 20 mpg which is really a low estimate considering I am running 31s with 4.10 gearing single cab 95 with a box in the back. Even pulled 20 mpg with a leaking head gasket so
Compression must be
Low. I think driving style has and the kind of roads ou drive has a lot to do with your mileage. Avoid going over 65 and city traffic, never try to keep up with other people pulling away at the lights and your mileage should climb.

Google Hypermiling.
I was getting 20mpg pulling a trailer in my bone stock 90 3.0.
I get over 30 sometimes in my 3.4 swapped automatic 4runner and I still don't have the hub conversion, and I couldn't get the 2000 tacoma computer to talk to the transmission correctly, so I don't think I have lockup either.
but like you'll see in the hypermiling stuff, some of it is extremely dangerous and some of it is just downright annoying to drive like that, but curiousity gets the better of me.. and I had to see what I could get..

BUT
I did drive 264 miles across west Texas, time being more important than MPG.
Trying to hold 80mph, stay between 72-78 and avg 19.6. Tires pressure was pumped up to 45 front 42 rear.

My 94, 22re hasn't gotten better than 20 yet:cry
W/ winter fuels I'm more like 15-17,
Last tank was 13.5MPG, but w/ lots of 4wd time.
If I get the cone washers out I'll get to the bearings...
I'm on day 3 PB blaster, last one just does not want to come out.
I have not done the math for having 235's vs the 225's, not thinking it will add that much.
Sure would like some better gears, the 4:10 make 1st and 2nd gears gutless, but traveling 80-90 isn't a problem:yikes
36 miles to town ~ 75mph.

My last tank was 18 mpg, mixed driving with a few cold starts in there (those seem to really kill the mileage). 31x10.5s, 4.56s, 5 speed, 55 MPH on the highway. I'm going to run synthetic in the rear and trans/transfer come spring.
Last summer I got 24 all highway, stock with 235/75s and 4.10s, doin' 55 mph as well.
Looking for a spare 22R-E AFM board to swap into my '83 Supra AFM this spring, might have a set of manual hubs I could put on too. I'd bet with eletric fan/manual hubs/supra AFM/235s/4.10s/cruise and a bit slower speed you could hit high 20s.

I found a vacuum leak on my Pickup, removed the 350lbs of sand, and unlocked my front hubs. Instant gain from 13.5mpg up to 20.5mpg. In the summer, I routinely get 22-23.5 on average.

Thought to add something to this thread.
I recently did the cooler air intake mod ala BigBlue where I pull air from the cowl area hoping that I'd get better mpg. I also swapped out the leaking radiator to an aluminum one and am unsure if that was a good idea or not since it takes FOREVER to warm up, trail cooling should be better though.
Filled up this morning and got 17.6mpg on winter fuel. That's up from the 15ish I was getting before. Maybe (and that's a BIG maybe) the summer mpg will go up as well which will put me a little above 25mpg..... keep your fingers crossed.
Of course the new, larger, tires are going to crush that but I'm hopeful.

I averaged 18-22 with 285/75r16 4:88 gears 5 speed...header free flow exhaust k&n air filter in stock location stil running stock fan...I just did the timing chain readjusted valves and a tune up. The truck runs tons better but i have not got a tank out of it yet I am going to 5:29 gears 35" tires. I am hoping to see the same or better millage we shall see as the new lift even though was the same height lifter the truck almost 2 inches....

I get 23mpg (adjusted for tire size) with a mix of mostly Hwy, but like 30% in town. I have 95 4runner, stock exhaust, rebuilt motor and head (12k on it), RV cam, 8month old 31x10.5 Falken wildpeak a/t's (pressure unknown right now), running 92 octane with ethanol in it ), with 4.10 gears, a home built deal to replace the airbox with a cone filter and a basket/roof rack on top. I have to pull hills in 3rd, but I am working on getting new exhaust, maybe a header, electric fan and manual hubs. My goal is 25 or better. Might not do the header as I think that might kill some of the mileage. But I am hoping the taurus fan and manual hubs will help.

I think manual hubs and a electric fan will help. I have the efan in mind for my truck as well. Also want to do the synthetic oil in the drivetrain too.
I'm currently getting ~24 MPG in a '86 sr5 ext cab 22RE 5 spd w/ 235/75r15 and 4.10's.
I just got some aluminum wheels - hope the lighter rotating mass helps.
