New to the forum and IFS here guys. I am looking to lift my 89 runner a couple of inches to easily fit 31's. I just got the Downey catalog (WOW) and I was eyeing the kit that just comes with the front torsion bars and the rear leafs for about 2-3 inches of lift. Is anyone here running this combo? From all of your experience, do any of you feel strongly either way about this setup? I am a weekend warrior with wheeling and this thing would see mostly street by far but I do want a better stance. Is it easy to change front torsion bars yourself? Thanks for helping a newbie here guys.

I'm also looking for a basic lift on my 88 runner, but i cant decide wut road im gonna take as far as wut lift. How much is the kit you are describing and where is it sold

just twist your stock torsion bars and buy a set of lift shackles for the back and you will EASILY clear 31's. I am running 33x12.50s on the same setup.

if your just looking to throw bigger tires on it...put in a body lift. Cheap and easy to install and doesn't put any stress on front parts like cranking your t-bars does.

ya but i dont want to crank the bars or get a BL i want a 2-3 inch SL and for not that much money. mtrdrms was the lift you are looking at the econo lift? or something else?

even tho they will fit, there wont be much room at all for anything. also who make the lift and how much was it?

Yeah I think it was the Econo lift. I dont exacly remember the name but it was just the t bars and springs.

if u get a body lift will it jack up your shifter on an automatic tranny b/c my bro had a 5 spd 95 4R and when he got his BL his sticks were real low

Or you can squeez in 35x10.5's without any lift too. Although the 4Runner rear might need some fender work, but not much if any.

yes it will...shifters will be lower...but if it's an automatic it shouldn't really be a problem, since your not shifting all the time.

i jsut dont see how an automatic shifter can stay up since it is plastic and cant be extended as easily

The only differnce between HD torsion bars and cranking your stock bars is the preload needed to get the lift. Both with provide the same lift. Your geomerty isn't changed, therfore you are just putting the suspension higer in its stock cycle. If you want a cheap simple lift its crank the stock bars and put shackles in the rear.

I have HD bars and they are so much stronger than stock I have the torsion bar bolt barly past hand tight, and its still more that I need....

HD springs in that back might be a better idea than shackles. Rather than just hiking up your body, flattening the springs, and looking weird it will actually give you better suspension (maybe stiffer) and you might even increase the tow rating heh heh
