even a 200hp N/A 22RE wouldn't be streetable. about the cheapest alternative for a 22RE truck/4runner would be a 7MGE swap, 190-200HP stock, or the 7MGTE, 232HP stock, but HUGE potential.
the 22RE is a truck motor, it's not in racecars for a reason. i recently bought a nissan versa. it's not for racing, it was built as a fuel-efficient commuter, but at least i KNOW it. i don't challenge people at traffic lights, or run it at the local drag strip. i also don't curse out J.C. Whitney because they don't carry a whole line of performance parts for the versa to go along with a 6" tip muffler, LED accent lights and loads of vinyl stickers. (none of which are on the car BTW)

Why are you staying away from turbo?
Lower compression pistons, and a metal head gasket, the 22R will take boost all day long, AND make some decent power. There's a 22R powered Celica just north of me, running megasquirt, and a GT28R turbo. AT 12psi, he makes 200whp, and 240ft/lbs of torque.
However, if you want N/A power, start off with a better platform. Like was said in this thread before, a Toyota 3RZ-FE (2.7L 16v I4) from a newer truck is ALMOST bolt-in. and gives you around 140hp to start. There's a TRD supercharger kit for it too if you want to go that route. If not, at the very least, you're starting with a 16 valve motor with more displacement, and an engine management system a decade newer.

im staying away from the turbo becuase in some desert races u can not use a turbo, thats the only reason im staying away from one, other wise id be all for it, ct26 would be my first turbo i think, ill look into that 2.7L motor my friends got one and he said it moves him around well , he claims it has 180 hp stock but i doubtd that. and for the 7mge or mgte i got one of those motors out back i own a supra, and ill think more of it, never drove the 7m still rebuilding the engine, but that eengine is in the supra and will be staying there,

200hp on a N/A 22RE would be expensive and would certainly have issues with passing emissions tests. But I don't think I'd say it wouldn't be streetable.
It would take some serious porting, a cam that would pull over 6500rpm, 12:1 compression, and you'd have to do something with the intake manifold to allow for more flow. Or you could just go with individual throttle bodies. And of course you'd need a programmable engine management system.
Definitely be pricey.
Now a 3rz or 4rz out a Tacoma would be easier to get to that mark. but it would still be not be cheap.

2RZ or 3RZ would require cutting out old motor mounts, welding new ones to the frame, and changing transmission. (if your truck was originally 22RE). 7MGE would only require 5MGE mount brackets (the ones that attach to the motor) and 7MGE bellhousing (bolts to the 22RE's original transmission, unlike the 2RZ/3RZ).

If you are going racing It will not be cheap.
If you want lots of horsepower from a 22RE turn it into a 22R and build a racing engine. I have a engine shop nearby that builds racing engines and that is what he told me about horsepower and Toyota 4 cylinders. Carburetors are much cheaper than high Roller fuel systems... I don't know what the dyno tests are but I believe 180HP would be easy with the 22R.

And Marlin makes bellhousings to bolt them to the R150, or I THINK the stock bellhousing will bolt to a W series.

What about the 22R/20R hybrid? What kinds of gains do you guys think you'd see out of that?
I saw an older Celica on craigslist with a blown 22R for a couple hundred, got me thinking, heh.

i'll have to look again about the 2.7 swap, but everything i've read about it being "bolt-in" pertained to 4runners/trucks originally equipped with the 3.0, not the 4-cylinder.

My buddy's 22re has a PVC pipe cold air intake on it, and that alone gave it 80 more horses!
No really, engine swap would be a lot cheaper.
I'll ask someone how much horsepower they have, and then I'll say something between 200 and 300........gopher power.
How can you drink that poor excuse of an energy drink? Rockstar tastes like crap! I like NOS, monster assault, savage, or venom. Good stuff.

anyway...ill quote the article cause i have the mag right here
A w56 is better then a g54, however we eventually swaped in a r151f from a 3.0l because they are stronger, and used a 3rz to r series tranny conversion bellhousing...[/quote]

I've never seen a single instance of a 3RZ being swapped into a 3.0 truck. The 3.4 is such an easy swap into an already-V6-powered truck that it's not even funny. With a W58 bellhousing, the 3RZ will bolt up to a W56 tranny and then all you have to figure out is motor mounts.

i'm not rolling in dough, i have a house note etc., and on top of that i'm a cheap ass. after i finish the headgasket on this truck i'll have less than $400 in it, INCLUDING buying the truck. i'm not going to run out and spend $1500+ on a motor swap (unless it's a 2LT), ESPECIALLY one like the 3RZ that still only came with 150hp.

Yeah, but if you can't stand out in a crowd than you're a conformist!
With enough stickers nobody can peer in so you don't have to worry about your buddy's making fun of you.
