make sure the suspension and tires are good... if the thing can't handle well, then you can't expect good control of the vehicle... the worst thing you want is any sort of lift... lower center of gravity = better/easier handling

brakes upgrade is debatable... if you can lock up the wheels on a GOOD set of tires at 65mph, then the brakes are powerful enough... the only reason to upgrade to something bigger is fade resistance... after a panic stop or two, stock might be inadequate

You people all rock. I'm finally reading the rest of the replys and I'm lmao. Ya, the driver is my Son. Thanks for so many great ideas. See I come from ridding high dollar choppers. The one thing over and over people always pull out in front of bike riders, even with lights on. I've learned to become a defensive driver all the time. Gave up ridding only because I need to spend more time with the kids. I love 4runners so I rescued one from a rusty death. Also cheaper than choppers and I will stay alive a little longer to watch the kids grow up. Hopefully my boys will appreciate these great trucks. And hunting. If you think of anything else please reply.

There are many great ideas here. My oldest son will be driving in 1.5 years so I've devolved to the point where I comment about driving situations like when two lanes are turning left. An amazing number of drivers don't stay in their lane.

I did the shoulder belts for the back seat. A friend commented that the rear lights of my 89 4Runner look very dim so I put new lenses on. Colored LED bulbs might work even better. And if you have a tow hitch they sell a hitch plug that is red LED and lights up with the brake light.

IMHO buy something that you don't mind losing, is cheap, and that parts are cheap for, and reinforce the heck out of it, because almost everyone of my friends my age has totaled at least one vehicle.

For Reinforcement i recomend heavy duty front and rear bumpers, sliders or something to protect the sides, either inner cage or exo, whichever you prefer/is road legal, or rollbar in the bed/bolted to the frame at least, and Beef up the frame as much as you can!!!

I say stick to some kind of truck/suv though, once again IMHO they are safer than cars.

THE ROLLOVER, AND SIDE DAMAGE SAFTEY OF TOYOTAS IS NEARLY NONEXISTENT!!!

im 19 now, and i've had three wrecks...

1. when i was 17, i was hit by a 2002 F-250 while i was driving a 1999 ford escort, totaled the escort, i got a pic of my car somewhere if you want to see it... crinkled his fender and bumper.

then i got this.

2. 4 months later, 3 days after i turned 18, i rolled my 1987 toyota xtra cab, i had a friend of mine in the truck with me. We're both lucky to be alive, if the hillside hadn't stoped us i at least would be dead, my head was pined between a xbox360 that i had in the passenger floorboard, and a collapsing roof. we almost rolled on top of a set of gas valves... 2 months, lots of new/used parts, and 4 cans of spraypaint later, i was driving yeehaw again

3. then about a month ago i backed up with my door open, causing this... thankfully i had recently purchased some parts trucks...

The hitch light sounds great. Where can I find one?
I have led lights in the rear. Man are do they make a difference. Adding another brake light is a great idea for everyone. Thanks.

Here you go:

http://www.amazon.com/Bully-CR-025-H.../dp/B001G4M9TE

I know I've seen them at Walmart too. The power is provided by the hitch plug. Duh, I guess.

I hate links. I swear I used to be able to copy and paste photos here. Can any body tell me why it doesn't work? Is it the site or my computer? Running Vista.

Is this easily done? My corner lights are both busted but I am planning on putting new ones in soon...this seems like a nice way to still have blinkers without having to deal with the front bumper blinkers in my '85.
