94 4x4 truck Roaring in front end!
I have a 94 Toyota pickup,22re,5sp,4x4....when I lock my hubs in and leave my transfer case in 2wd it roars really loud with kind of a vibration but when I put it in 4wd it only does it when iam coasting, but if I hit the throttle it will stop immediately when in 4wd....iam thinking it is something in the differntial cause I have checked most of my front end..... Oh and it does not do it at all when the hubs are unlocked....any help would be greatly appreciated on diagnoses and parts prices

because the wheels are locked when they should be free while in 2wd. just keep it in 2wd with the hubs unlocked. if your in 4wd on the street the hubs don't have to be locked.

Say huh?
If you're in 4WD without the hubs locked, you're not really in 4WD are you? On the street, or off, makes no difference neither.
Maybe you meant to say, if you're on the street and the hubs are locked you don't want to be in 4WD(unless you're going in a straight line, when it wouldn't matter). You can have the hubs locked all the time though. If you want(but I don't know why you would on the street if the hubs are unlockable).
Anywho, sounds to me like it could be a loose pinion bearing(pinion nut needs retightened/restaked). Or possibly a front driveshaft u-joint needs replaced. But it could also be the spindle bushings/bearings too. Or any combination of those things, or the others mentioned.

if he is in 2wd and the hubs are locked the axles will be spinning with the power of the front wheels moving.
IDK though i could be wrong

You aren't wrong...NOW!
But none your first post makes any sense(and/or has any relevance to this thread). We already know WHY it's happening. It's WHAT is happening(as in what part's making the noise) that is the question at hand. NOT why...get it?
And that link you posted contains some nonsense as well.
So which is it? Noisier ride and more vibrations with them locked in 2WD? Or it "will have no negative effects"?
Let me tell you in case you don't know. It WILL have those negative effects AND THEN SOME!!!
But do watcha like...

So, what should you do?
I would recommend that you leave your locking hubs disconnected when there is no need for 4WD in sight. You'll achieve a quieter ride on pavement with less vibrations with hubs unlocked...

The differential fluid has never been low...I check the front rear and tranny once a month when I grease......I don't think it would be in the hubs either because I have checked them twice now and no unusual wear was there....i'm prolly gonna try to tear it apart next week and find out for sure....if I get enough time to park it.....I'm leaning toward differential being loose or wore, and I use my 4wd when it snows cause that's when I get most of my ot...so I have to leave my hubs locked in when on the road and 10-12 in of snow is piled up....our road dept sucks
