Hey turbo this may be a stupid question but would a leaky damper show up on a fuel pressure gauge? I brought that up to a mechanic and he left my truck hooked up to a gauge and said the pressure was fine and didn't fluctuate. I then concluded that it wasn't the damper, he said the fuel smell was coming from the tail pipe but I think it's conning through the heater.

well that's the weird thing about that freakin' part. while the truck was running it actually ran quite well. took it to the salt flats and back (about 1400 miles round trip) with no issues with acceleration or idling. the only issue i found was when i would go to start it while it was warm. however, it would start if i left it sitting for less than 5 minutes or so. if i just ran into a gas station i wouldn't have any issues. the leak is slow and appears insignificant so it probably wouldn't show up on a pressure gauge while the vehicle is running. however, after it has sat for a while and the fuel makes it way completely out of the fuel rail it could lead to hard starts while the fuel repressurizes. the reason i think that part might be the issue in this case is because there was a mentioning of the '91 sitting for a while before wayota purchased it. if there was no fuel in the fuel rail to prevent corrosion of the inner workings of the fuel system then i would imagine the injectors would be buggered. the cold start injector seems to be OK though. interesting issue!

Well mine had been sitting for a while as well. It sounded like he said that it took 30 min for it too start? I found a thread where a guy had a leaky damper but it took him 8-15 sec to start, not 30min

yes for 30 minutes. It seems like when it happens if you try to crank it then it just gets worse. so I just walked away from it and walked to gas station. when it does act up and it does start there is a dead spot on the throttle you have to watch out for but when you shift in to 2nd gear and keep the rpms up then your fine. The truck runs great when it wants to I am going to pull the fuel filter again today and dump it in a glass jar see what I find also keep you posted

update. Changed the exhaust from the cat back, put in the new EFI relay, changed the fuel filter again. The one I just put on was full of something. I am going to drop the tank. It does run better and has not left me sitting so lets hope I have found it.

My 88 3.0 does the exact thing... If it's been driven a while, I turn it off (like to fill up with gas) and try to start it after I'm done filling up and it doesn't wanna start. Or it will and it stumbles like too much fuel for a couple seconds. At the gas station I had to wait 30 minutes and it fired right up.... I believe I have narrowed it done to the temp sensor being faulty and thinking it needs fuel for a cold start when it doesn't.

Well I have a top end open right now the valves needed adjusted bad. So right now she sits in my shop after I get it buttoned back up I am dropping the tank 3rd fuel filter and it still it putting what looks like little black chunks of rubber in the filter.
