87 4runner' Rear wheel leaking gear oil

Anyone know what the most common rear seal to go out is?
Inner or outer. I want to know what parts to get before i go to the parts store.

Thanks

inner ... or housing seal .

have a good look at the bearing ... this is usually the culprit . The seals dont usually " go " with out a reason ..

another culprit , may be the diff breather .. make sure top is free .

Yea, it's possible that your have a clogged diff breather, but if oilis only comming out of one side then it's most likely a seal. I had that happen to my driver side years ago and it was the inner seal that failed. Guess it's not bad to have it go after 300k miles.

Why not replace both for insurance? It doesn't cost much and you have the axle out already.

Inner seal is the oil seal the outer seal is a dust seal and water seal to keep the bearing dry. The bearing is permanently lubricated. If you leaked gear oil into it it will need to be replaced. If you don't replace it now you will be replacing it soon because the gear oil will have washed the grease out of it. :pat:
