Just a little info before we get started:

I have 2 4runners both are pretty much the same as far as mechanical at least that's what I thought.

1) 1986 4runner Dlx I purchased brand new 2.4L
2) 1987 4runner SR5 I purchased 2012 to rebuild. Pretty much the same as the 1986

I'm rebuilding the 1987 first as it was the easiest and the 86 later as I let it sit for about 10yrs in the weather and it didn't sit to well.

I am at the point of redoing the rear breaks and though it be a good idea to change out the cylinders and saw how cheap they are now so I tried to order 2 sets one for the 87 and the other for the future build on the 86. Turns out that they say they are different.

Does anyone know if this is true? i didn't get to see the part and haven't taken apart either 87 or 86 to look at.

From what I just looked up on Napa Prolink they are indeed two different numbers.

Now is the 86 a SFA ??

This is one of those things do you have the production dates??

Your going to have to pull a drum off the both of them and look.

Hey wyoming9, Thanks for the reply.

No the 86 is a IFS, I understand that the SFA ended its production in 85 and introduced the IFS in 86. My buddies 85 4Runner was SFA and when I purchased my in 86 they told me that it is now IFS for a better ride and handling. All I could say was more trouble and more expensive to fix.

It can get real weird around that time I have one titled as a 85 that is IFS

it is going to come down to having to check and see just what you have.
