4Runner miss
My name is Jaren, I have a 1987 4Runner, 22RE...
Engine was rebuilt at 217xxx miles, I got the truck back the wednesday of last week, and the shop that rebuilt the motor said it had a miss and it could be the ignition module. Sure enough, it missfire's while idling and while accelerating. We timed it and nothing changed, it drives and has a lot of power, it just will miss and its irritating. It didnt do that before it was rebuilt, anyone had any experience with this or know a solution? School starts tomorrow, so I would like to get the truck running right ASAP.

First thing i would do is check your firing order and make sure your plug wires arent crossed. While your doing that check to see if each plug is making spark. Iv seen this happen alot.
Might check filters and such too... make sure the engine can breathe good and that ur fuel filters not clogged.

Fuel filter is brand new, cant be the firing order, it idles fine and drives and each wire has spark... just misses once in a while. Forgot to mention that the tach jumps around sometimes.

Another thing iv seen happen with rebuilt 22re's is the rocker arms. Sometimes they get over tightened to where the valves dont close all the way. Friend of mine had this issue.. couldnt figure it out for the life of him till he pulled the valve cover. They were tightened way way too tight lol
Idk if a vacuum leak could cause ur issue but it might be something to check... idk just throwin out ideas lol

Disty cap is brand new, and we were thinking it could be a bad ground...
Is there a thread already showing or does somebody know all the grounds on a RE?

There's one on the back of the head and on the pass front side of the block that goes to the battery. Also, the efi harness grounds on the intake plenum where the upper and lower chambers come together.

Check the rubber elbow that comes off the throttle body, they can crack and cause unmetered air to get into the engine, and that will cause a miss. I just had this happen to me a few days ago.

You might have checked this but make sure all of your fuel injectors are plugged in!
I had the same issue took it to a shop they said that I had a burnt valve and it would be $1,500 to fix it. This is after they charged me $150 to diagnose the issue. I called up my buddies from the 4 wheel drive club and they said if you had a 1990 3vz with a burnt valve you couldn't drive your truck that the engine would be jumping out of your hood practically, took it over to their house and found that one fuel injector wasn't plugged in all the way. After plugging it in it runs normal.

Mine had an odd ball miss like that. I traced it down to a bad connection in the main power wire to my fuse box in the engine compartment. I replaced the wire from the battery to the box, and upgraded my ground cable on the battery to 1 gauge. Problem solved. It is a long shot, but it worked for me.

Checked grounds, but it still does it.
I will have my brother in law check the codes it throws as soon as he can...
But school is going now and I dont have a lot of daylight time. Thanks for the help guys, hopefully it gets done soon...

Being the tack jumps around some times makes me wonder.
Is it hard to set timing too? Does the line jump all over when your shooting the crank pully?
If so I would point at a bad dizzy.
I know on our 4age eng's we would see the same thing. Pull the dizzy and see if you have alot of shaft play?
