4cyl vs V6 3rd members...differences?

4cyl vs V6 3rd members...differences?

I pose a queston as I'm in the market for a new third member for my V6 '91 truck. I keep seeing posts and ads for various 3rd's with various gears and lockers. My biggest confusion comes in the question of:

"What is the difference between a 4cyl and a V6 3rd?"

What is the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Will a 4cyl 3rd work on my V6 truck? If so would I want to do this?

Any and all help is appreciated. Even if you don't want to answer but rather post links to sites where I could read for myself, any info would be appreciated.

Hey Morphine,

I asked the same questions about a month ago, which was before I swapped in my 4.56 V6 3rd in place of a 4.10 4cyl 3rd. It was a straight bolt in swap.

YES, they are interchangeable. But personally, I would get the V6 3rd since it's beefier.

The V6 version has 4 spiders and has extra ribs cast into the housing. This is no big deal if you intend to replace the carrier with a locker.

Thanks for the info. One question however is the difference between the 2-pinion and 4-pinion? What does this translate to in english? Also would there be a considerable price difference betwen them, since the V6 is more desireable, it seems that it should command a higher price.

Now to continue on - If my truck see's light wheeling, maybe 4 to 6 times a year, and easy to mild trails, would it be a "bad" decision to go with the 4cyl 3rd?

Looking for opinions here, I know no one can give me a correct answer just opinions.

If you don't wheel hard, don't sweat trying to get a V6 third. The 4cyl one is fine.

I would say go with the 4cyl. They are more readily available, and there are more traction device options for the 4cyl (ie Aussie Locker). Having looked at both, I would say the the 2-pinion 4cyl 3rd offers a better view at the condition of the components inside. Especially if you only do light wheeling.

I guess we're lucky out here in Vancouver, BC. V6 3rds seem to be a dime a dozen. I picked up my V6 4.56 3rd for $150 and the front IFS for $80.

I don't know. All I know is that the carrier, and pinion gear for the V6 3rd is stronger than the 4cyl one. Having said that, I've heard that if you plan to lock it, it won't matter, because you'll be replacing said components anyway (other than the carrier).

Ok, if you find that deal again or even better one with 4.88's I'll include a bounty for you!!!! I keep seeing prices all over the place from $260 just for the rear plus shipping to over $800 for the rear. I just don't want to get shafted onthis deal! So a big thanks to all for helping me here.
