keep in mind though how far are you really planning on building your rig. if you plan to go with bigger tires later i would just get the 5.29s my opinion.... just shift quicker and you'll be fine lol.

and if you plan on getting 32s get a 33 lol. not much of an upgrade from 31-32

I'm running 4.56's, 33 x 12.5 BFG AT's on rock crawler steelies, 22re, 5 speed.
It feels basically back to stock. I was running 31's and 4.56's for the summer. Zippy for sure.
I've got the 4.88's sitting in my backyard, still contemplating putting them in or not.
I'll run a couple tanks through this setup and take it out on some hills, I'll let you know in a couple weeks if I still want to swap to 4.88.

I forgot you said you had 4.10s to begin with, 4.56s may be just what you're looking for to run 33s depending on what size of tires your truck came with. check this link out: http://www.tellico4x4.com/moreinfo/ratio.htm

Rear diff is about 40lbs, front is about 70 lbs.
The rear diff will fit in a 5 gallon bucket.
The front will fit in a double-wide milk crate.

Ship it using Greyhound cargo. It'll take about a week but it will cost you about $60-$80.

How "zippy" are the 4.56's on 31's? I can't decide between 4.56's and 4.88's on my '86 22r 4WD 5spd with 31 x 10.50's on R-15. I have 4.10 and they are definately NOT zippy right now, shoot I can't hardly take it on the highway!!! Thanks for your feedback.

Zippy:
Actual speed is 6 km/h under the speedometer reading.

I'm running 4.56's and 33's. It's pretty much back to stock non-zippy-ness.

thanks

Are you sure you dont have the 4.30's in your truck?

It came stock with V6 trucks/4runners with the 31" tires and an automatic tranny. If its a manual, it was a 4.56:1

It uses it own housing. Pinion location is offset. The 430 and 456 housing is the same.

i'm pretty sure there 4.10's. the code on the door is g292, and from what i've found that means that they're 4.10's.
my truck is a 4cyl 5spd manual.
have you heard of 4.30's with a 4cyl 5spd?
thanks

I have 4.10's with 31 x 10.50's, the truck came with the stock 225/75's. I can tell you it's SLOOOOOOOOOOOW with a 5spd 22r! From what I understand the 4.56's will get it close to stock but the 4.88's may increase acceleration but cause a dip in gas mileage. Does this sound right?

well the fact that it's a 4runner too probably doesn't help at all. there's more weight there than there is in a pickup. so mine would probably be slower too than yours is.

assuming you understand the aspect ratio method of tire sizing I'll skip all that and cut to the chase, your 225/75s end up being about 28.25 inches in diameter, using the chart posted earlier in the thread, you can determine that 4.56 gears with 31s will bring you very close to your stock gearing, meaning your speedometer will be accurate again. However it may not give you quite the same pep as the 4.10s with the 225s because you are spinning a heavier tire. But... 4.88s would end up gearing you a bit low I think, when your speedo says 65, you would only really be traveling 60.6. To achieve the same actual speed, with the 4.88s and 31s, you would have to rev your vehicle about 7 percent higher... so you may see a slight dip in fuel economy, but that would depend on the type of driving you do, and the rpm @ which your engine gets its peak fuel economy... Hope that makes sense
