3.0 auto trans shifting weird

i own a 92 4x4 3.0 auto sr5 xtra cab pickup. the problem is that my trans has been acting funny. it seems like the torque converter is locking up too soon. i talked to my tran guy and he test drove the truck and suggested the tps was the problem. well i changed it and it's still doing the same. i asked him if it could be the silenoids causing it to do this. he said nope. i don't know. i haven't changed the fluid because i'm scared the trans might not work after the change.

the crazy thing is that is shift perfect when the overdrive is engaged. it hold all the gears great. i did notice with the new tps that i got better gas mileage. i went from 12.5 to 14.5 mpg. not the greatest but still better. any help would be highly appreciated. thanks in advance.

My converter will lock up with the OD off also, it is normal. But if your sure yours is locking up too soon I would check the following.

1. Check the adjustment on the TV cable. If it is too loose it will make the transmission think your giving it less throttle than you really are.

Refer to check number 3 for adjusment specs.

2. Are you sure you have the TPS adjusted correctly. There is alot of adjustment room on the TPS and even if it is perfectly fine you will have symptoms of a malfuctioning one if its not adjusted correctly.

If your scared to change your fluid you should do a quick inspection to see if you should. Just pull the plug and drain it into a clean tub so it can be put back in. Drop the pan and look inside. Check to see if you have an abnormal amount of clutch material in the bottom of the pan. This will appear as black sludge looking stuff. If there is not alot in there then its probably safe to change the fluid and you should do so. Keep in mind that pulling the pan or plug to drain the fluid doesnt even get half of it out. So if you really want to change it you should have a flush done.
