Question 22RE surging acceleration with tps hooked up...

I recently rebuilt the 22RE in my 87 4Runner. The truck had been sitting for 8 years when I bought it from my parents. This is the first engine of any kind I have ever rebuilt. It runs good until I try to rev it up. With the tps unhooked it accelerates fine but when I hook up the tps it surges when I try to accelerate(this is while the truck is siting in the drive and not going down the road). I've checked the timing and have set the tps twice but no luck. It also doesn't have alot of power and I'm assuming that the 2 problems may be related. I've read a few threads but nothing yet with the same problem as I'm having. Also plan on trying to adjust the tps one more time tonight when I get home using some instructions I saw in a thread here. Just wanted to throw it out there before I spend unnecessary funds on a new tps. Thanks in advance, Guss

Is it revving at idle. Really high to almost cutting off?

No reving at idle. It idles just fine. Only surges when I push on the accelerator to rev the motor up.

Want able to check the tps adjustment last night because of work schedule but will check it tonight. Just to better explain the surge if I'm not explaining it well enough, if I sit in the truck in my drive and try to rev the engine up to 1000 rpm at a stand still, the motor will surge back and forth between 750 and 1000. If I get it up to 1500 rpm it swings between 1000 and
1500. Hope this helps and will c itheck in the morning and get back tomorrow afternoon.

You either have a bad TPS or a vaccume leak.

Try first and check for vaccume leaks.

Then try and set the base idle at 750-800 RPM. Then set the timing to 5* BTDC with the TE-1 and E1 jumped in the diagnosis box. Then check the TPS according to 4crawler's site. After adjustment your still getting the surging idle then I would replace the TPS.

Did you ever fix it.My 92 did the same thing,if you unplug the tps and it runs it probably isnt a vacume leak, mine turned out to be the mass air meter.hope this helps.

I finally was able to fix it this afternoon! After knocking off several other projects I've had laying around I started checking things out a few days ago. I checked the tps but could never get my readings accurate on the ohm meter. I finally took the tps all the way off and realized that I didn't pay very good attention when I lined it up and installed it. Apparently it makes a difference which side of the tabs on the tps you put the tabs from the throttle body...duh! Reinstalled the tps correctly, checked with an ohm meter, and voila! Thanks for the patience and all the advice. I especially liked all the info on 4Crawlers site! Thanks again, Guss

I hate to resurrect this thread but I'm having issues again! I've driven my runner a couple of times on short trips to town but no long treks. I hopped in it this past weekend and now I have no power again and it idled like crap. I got my neighbor to help with rechecking the timing and with it jumpered and set to 5° it barely idles. If we adjusted the timing way out(like 30° +) the truck would idle fine but not at 5°. I rechecked the tps and now my test results are completely different than the first time. My readings according to 4Crawlers site were as follows: test 1=120 ohms, test 2= infinite, test 3= infinite, test 4=16k ohms, last test = 18k ohms. I'm pretty sure my tps has bit the dust but I would prefer a confirmation from someone more experienced with this. Thanks in advance and sorry for dragging this out.
