22RE sick of the problems.
i've had nothing but problems with 22RE's. I like the motors, i've had bad luck with them, the used one i just put in is extremely noisy on the top end, and it doesn't have much power at all, Pre-84 block.
i'm thinking of swapping the motor this spring.
thinking of a 3RZ or a 3.8 buick, i can get the buick for free, but i'd be carburated. 3RZ i'd have to pay for.
just wondering if anyone on here has done a 3rz swap or not.

I agree with you... The 22RE just doesn't seem to be the motor its cracked up to be for me either. I replaced mine at 130k, and again at 190k, and then my rebuilt motor threw a timing chain so I rebuilt the top end myself at 205k. It's been great for the last 5k or so since then, but you'd have thought a motor with the rep a 22RE has that was maintained as well as mine was would have run better.
When the motor that's in mine goes I'm going 350SB/TH350 and never looking back...

Listen to what you are saying........Buick???????????? I am second owner of my stock 22re with 450k km on it. New timing chain and that is it. If they are put together right with the right parts they are great. Cheap out on parts or labour and they will die just like any motor.

ok so i have some questions? Are you really running a pre 84 block with the 92 injection also if it is are you using the early steel rockers which are incredibly noisy, also which valve cover, and I think the 22res are as reliable as the hacks you let work on them. I quit installing motors built by nation wide mass producers with large warranties because they were a poor product.(I'm not naming them) Just like Tommy Boy said: I can crap in a box and slap a good warranty on the box I've got the time. When you open the box it's still a piece of crap. Last of all i've seen customers that could break an anvil.

yeah, i'm running a pre 84 longblock thats injected, already ran into a few problems like the block is lacking a spot for the knock sensor.
i adjusted the valve lash to .010 like the cam card said, so the pre '84 rockers are abnormally noisey then? the motor came with the round valve cover, swapped it out to my later valve cover.
is it bad i'm doing this?

I've just got to LOL at this thread. Everybody talks about what a piece of crap the 3VZE is, now the 22RE? That's right - all Toyota motors are crap. They very rarely make it past 75k miles.......hmmm......I must be coming up on the fourth new engine for my truck...wonder how they get in there......must be elves......thanks Santa!!

i just havn't had good luck with 22RE's, all i see are people saying how great they are and stuff. and i'm on my 2nd one and its a rattle box with no power at all, i've got a comp cam and downey header and the thing can't get out of its own way on the highway. not saying its not a good motor for offroading where your using lower gears, but the highway isn't my trucks friend.

Its a truck not a race car. They were not made for 70+ mph (like eightnine said). Everyone wants their trucks to have 300hp and pull 15000 lbs of trailer up 20% grade at 75mph (look at all the new full size trucks). WTF??? Ever see a Freightliner pull a full load like that? I doubt it, but it will get up the hill time and time again just like a 22re powered Toyota will...........
Don't give up on her. Buick????? I feel sick again...........

Until you have 400k on yours that you put on yourself I really don't think your opinion matters much...
And I have to laugh at your use of the rolleyes at me for the design failure on the third. It actually was. Why the hell would they put a plastic drivers side timing rail in an engine is beyond me. That broke and fell to the bottom and went through the bottom gear causing a jump in time, a destroyed timing cover, and 4 bent intake valves. I had no reason to be concerned with the condition of the timing rails in a motor with only 15k on it...
