22re knocks at idle
I got a 92 22re that started a knocking at idle. it sounds like a loud valve ticking "makes it sound like a diesel" but i cheked them 2 times and there all on. It only makes the noise when hot and at idle. above idle it goes away and its not there when cold. run's fine with 178k, last owner said timeing chain and cover was replaced at 140k. Any thoughts ? I'm thinking of try some oil additive like sea foam.

Was the timing chain cover replacement a toyota OEM? I just had to have my 22RE rebuilt because the oil pump calved; mechanic said the previous owner used a substandard aftermarket timing cover; this caused premature wear on the oil pump. The rest is history.......
Or I'm completely out to lunch.....

I had the same problem and it was that I put a wrong bolt (to long) in the chain cover and it caused the tensioner not to work right. Do a search on here and you will get a picture of the bolt. It is one of the top oil pump bolts right under the timing mark tab. If it is 2mm to long it will bind the tensioner. Just pull it out and grind off about 3mm.
I spent months trying to find that problem. It sounds almost like a spark knock. It is the chain slaping the bolts that hold the rail on.
