Question 22RE Distributor Help

I bought anouther 22RE for my 86 4Runner and the new engine has a vacum thing on the distributor and the orginal one dosen't. What does the vacum thing for?

It's the vacuum advance. Are you sure it's a 22re? Only 83 (Celica only) and 84 (Celica and 2WD SR5 pickups only) 22re's used a vacuum advance can. You may have a 22r motor.

I know for sure its a 22RE out of a 87 4Runner. What was teh vacum advanced used for?

It's used to advance the timing at idle. It's a mechanical system. The 22RE EFI doesn't use it. There is a chance that it will "work" - it certainly will drop in to the head. It's also a 2 wire setup that may plug in.
It's *not* the right distributor the VAST EFI ignition system. If it runs, my guess is that the ignitor is defaulting to limp home timing...
