22r head bolt order?
I put this in the newbie section, and sorry I don't know how to delete that post. Thought it might get more looks here. Thanks.
New here, but have gotten a lot of good stuff from lurking. Anyways, I'm doing a head gasket on my 87 4x4 22r, and when I brought my head to the machine shop, they cleaned it up real nice, machined it, pressure tested, etc, and i left my head bolts in, with rocker arm assembly in place, and they gave it back to me with the head bolts in a bag. I've heard they go in a specific order, the shop said it didn't matter. They appear to be the same, but I want to do it right.
Also, do I need to have the rocker arm assembly on the head flush? I've been wiggling it and get it just right. Should I loosen the valve adjustment nuts, get the head bolted back in, and then adjust valve clearances?

The stock bolts are not torque to yield bolts so they can be reused. Most of the time when rebuilding a engine people like to put everything back in the exact spot where they came. Are you asking for the torque order?

it doesn't matter in which order if you put new ones in. But it does matter in which sequence you torque them down. I'd put new ones in just to be on the safe side even though they are not torque to yield. Think of it as insurance.

Basically i agree with the new bolts, you want it done right the first time so why not spend a little more and get new ones. the torque sequence is pretty easy, if you need a picture i can get you one.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm good on torque sequence, just checking that if all the bolts were removed, they could go in any hole. I called the Toyota dealer and they said they could go anywhere. I may still pick up new bolts.

yes loosen all the rocker arm adjusters (put new ones in to avoid headaches) If you can see an hourglass type shape on the tips it's time to replace them. Replace the nuts and the adjuster screws all at once. Another one of those cheap insurance jobies. When assembling the rocker shafts make sure you grease the shaft. I prefer to use Sta-Lube Marine grease, but any wheel bearing (moly) type grease works too.
