EDIT: I found this thread (https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...when-cold.html) but even after waiting 20+ minutes for the engine to get up to temperature it still has the issue stated below.

I've looked through some of the threads but haven't found the same issue as others. My transmission isn't shifting automatically between 2 and 3 when I first start the vehicle up. I have to put it into N around 35MPH, rev around 3500-4000RPM before putting it back into D to get it to shift properly. If I don't initially hit the RPM for a long enough time (i.e. ~35MPH at greater than 3500RPM for approximately 2 seconds), when I shift back to D it either stays in 2 or acts as if it is in N.

I've tried manually shifting from 2 to D but it doesn't have the same effect and sometimes makes the car act as if it is in neutral when it is actually in D (like mentioned above). I have to do this every time I start the vehicle after the engine cools off. It shifts normally after the engine has warmed up and have successfully manually shifted it once (i.e. Running a quick errand where I turn the truck on and off it works properly). After I have manually shifted it once, no matter how many times I start and stop at lights, it doesn't happen again. Similarly, I have tried allowing the engine to warm up and trying it that way, but I still have the same issue--if it is sitting for more than a couple hours at a time (engine warmed or not), I have to shift to N for it to shift up to 3 the first time and after that it shifts properly.

I was planning on changing out the solenoids this weekend but decided to reach out and see if anyone has other suggestions because I'm honestly not sure that is the issue. There has been no check engine lights on so there are no codes for me to check. Any suggestions are appreciated.
