1993 pickup truck 3rd gear grind

Picked up a 93' 2WD truck yesterday with 188k miles. Engine is running strong and smooth. Only problem is that about 70% of the times when I shift into 3rd, it grinds. Most of the times is when I upshift or downshift at a higher RPM.

Anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm....could be clutch going...could be needing a new shifter seat bushing...might need to flush clutch fluid....could be synchronizer in tranny. Does the clutch ever slip?

Do a search on shifter seat bushing and GL-4 gear oil. There's good info in threads related to these topics that could give you some tips and places where to start tracking down your problem. A simple fix...like these two...may be all you need. If neither of these fix it, they are still a very good thing and comparitively inexpensive.

if memory serves 3rd gear syncro was the the most common one to go first.

try speed shifting and see if you still get the grind...

Think your right snap-on, I believe 3rd gear is the first to go.

Ya might want to try replacing your tranny fluid with Shock Proof, the stuff works great and helps worn trannies.

Thanks for the help guys! I don't think the clutch is slipping. Not that I can feel anyways. I'm going to buy these...

- Heavy Duty Shifter Seat from Marlin Crawler.
- Red line MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil (How many bottles do I need??)

Anything else I should get/replace while Im at it??

This is my first Toyota pickup. Im excited and planning on keep it for awhile.

Yes, it's fixable....meaning rebuild. But, personally I'd try some of the simple and inexpensive things FIRST. I had grinding issues and feared the synchros, but a new shifter bushing and the gear oil completely solved the problem. If it doesn't, you're not really out anything because with that mileage the seat bushing is probably toast, anyway. If you have slop in the shifter it's a real good sign. And the gear oil...well, it was worth a shot. Might even be reusable. The seat bushing...and cap...definitely is.

All other gears are perfect. Smooth.
Only 3rd gear, and only when I shift at higher RPMs. I tried to speed shift, much less grinding if any. But I dont feel like speed shifting all the time...

Oh, if it's a 5spd you'll need a little over 4qts. Drain it hot...reasonably.. so you get out as much of the old as you can. AND! Make sure you can get your fill plug off BEFORE you drain it.

I've been through a few times. Helena Blues Festival was a nice stop. So, I know....flat, flat, flat. I was just messin'.

phatmitzu- Someone advised me to fill the tranny from the shifter when I was doing what you are going to be. It makes it very easy. Just have a clean drip pan underneath to catch overflow from the fill hole. That way you also hear the "plop" hitting the pan and know to stop....if you are doing it by yourself.

i think that works fine on a w56 but on the r150f it's not so good - something about the transfer case and tranny sharing fluid and the tcase not getting any if you fill through the shifters.

might want to do more research before you use this method
