OK,

I just got off the phone with Toyota. They said they can't find any fuel leaking. I know that as soon as I get the truck home, it will leak the next morning. Ridiculous.

What next?

OK.
I picked up the truck from the dealer on the 26th, ad it had a STRONG gas odor the entire way home. Even my co-worker couldn't believe how strong the smell was, but I had to drive it home, so I proceeded homeward. I even pulled over once just to make sure that gas wasn't spraying all over the engine bay. Nothing. Toyota told me to bring it back when it is leaking so they can fix it (I paid for nothing by the way). So far, the last two mornings, I haven't seen a drop. What the heck? Am I going insane? Oh I did leave ONE detail out of all of this: I failed to mention that I replaced the gas cap with a new one the day before all of this leaking happened. I really doubt that means anything though. Am I going insane? Is it possible for a leak to just go away?

P.S. I do have a fire extinguisher just in case.

This may have already been mentioned, I have fought an injector leak for years. Gas leaks out from the upper o-ring onto the manifold, then evaporates and gets sucked right into the cabin air intake, yum. After driving it, grab a flashlight and look at each injector for gas residue. It is really hard (maybe impossible?) to see the passenger side injectors though with the plenum on.

I have my truck apart right now to try another set of o-rings.

OK, the leak has appeared again. I looked at the back of the plenum where the damper is located and saw nothing. As a matter of fact, I can't see anything on the top side of the engine bay. The only thing I can tell is that it is on the passenger side (American) and I can only trace it to somewhere below the exhaust manifold. I also found it will leak as long as the engine is running on the initial starting of the motor and will keep leaking after it is warm, but it will stop when the engine is shut off and left to sit for a few minutes, and then restarted.

Any ideas?

P.S. Oh yeah, this only seems to be happening the morning after I put gas in the tank. Yet another oddity.

Can you trace the supply and return lines and see how they look? They are over where you are talking about.

What about the cold start injector line?

Check your fuel line that go under the air chamber to the gas rail then to those injector's [ I would replace the entire gasket that involve gases ], I'll replace the o-rings on all injector like 89skirig mention. Well since you are giong insane there, can you take any picture of the leak and other stuff, I always ask this but ended up no picture. Also check your CSi if it is loose there, there are two copper gasket on that part. I would replace the vacuum through the FPR fuel line and use some clamps to hold them tight, so good luck on finding it.

I had this EXACT same problem a couple of weeks ago. Same gas smell, same leak off the transmission bellhousing, pretty much everything you described. And yes it was the fuel dampener on the back of the fuel rail. Part was about 50 bucks and I paid for like an hour of labor to replace it. Picked it up yesterday and no more gas smell!

Apparently this is a pretty common problem with these engines. Can't complain though, this is the first thing that has broke on mine and I just turned 200K! Now excuse me while I go find some wood to knock on...

After no replies to my question on the newbie section, I since now day time, I saw it was after much study online, the cold start injector line which of course to get to I had to take off the top intake. What a pain in the ass this engine has been so far. I'm sure this is a Toyota only part so will order it tomorrow. I can't even find it online so will take the actual part to the Stealer to order.

I just did my HG and had a leak from the damper. It didn't always leak, and left different drip stains every time. The damper was an easy $75 fix, minus the fact I backed the old one out too far and broke the BSV. Replaced that too... Once the new damper was in, the leak stopped. Apparently the set screw on the back of it backs out quite often on our "older" vehicles.

I didn't see the fuel leak either, I felt it with my hand.

I have the same problem but no leak dripping. and yes it is 2011 so I hope you found the problem. I had bad idle but replace the fuel filter and now it is around 850 warm, 1050 cold.
