1986 4Runner Lift Question..

I just bought an 86 4Runner with a 22re with a blown headgasket.

Just ordered Engnbldr's Timing Set, and Full Gasket Set.

I am now looking at topguncustomz.com lift kits.

My main question is, if I order this lift kit:

Will 30" Tires be safe? Or will it be very wobbly/unstable and/or look stupid?

Any input is appreciated.


Going to upgrade all shocked to hydro, and get a steering stabilizer.

Also, if the 4" lift kit is to much for 30" tires, where can I find a 3" lift for cheaper than $599?

What's you plans for the truck? Wheelin or pavement (mall rated).

Regaurdless you won't want that lift for 30", why bother lifting?

I dont plan on having 30" tires forever, I will hit my budget with the lift kit. Tires will come later.

We already own a 5Speed 88 4Runner (22re) with a 4" Lift and 33" tires. The whole point is I will take mine, and my GF's dad will take our other one. Go hit up the trails.

You can get 30x10.50's in there with no lift. If you want a cheap 3" lift, go with a body lift (Roger Brown aka 4Crawler) then do a drivetrain lift. Better money spent than suspension. If I could take my 4" off and go 3" body I would, but now I'm debating adding a 2-3" lift and doing a drivetrain lift.

I'd check with TC about lifts. Guy seems to be one of the most knowledgeable guys on here about wheeling with IFS.

If there is a 3" lift kit out there for my 86 I would gladly go that route.

My GF's dad has owned 6-7 Toyota 4Runners and Pickups. He refuses to put a body lift on them. And I will be purchasing 33" tires around Tax Return Time.

And I already have 30x10.50's on there.

I am ordering tomorrow. So any input before then is appreciated. Think I could fit 32x10.50's on my Rims? They currently have 30x10.50 on them.

That's why I was asking. For trails you going to want springs not blocks. I went with Downey 3" and 25 or 26 mm torsion bars. I wound up having to add three leave from my old pack to keep them where I want them. I'm running 33"s

Depending on where you live/wheel at will effect if you want a body lift. It can make you more adapt to roll on off camber runs. Maybe or maybe not.

oh, forgot ball joint spacers for front lift and springs for rear is another idea, too.

I would not waste your money on that lift.

You can easily fit 33x10.50 with ball joint spacers in the front and new leaf springs or longer shackles in the rear.

You will need 2-3" longer shocks and an alignment and you have still spent less than the cost of that lift.

Your truck will still handle well and be very capable off road.

Better to spend your money on armor and lockers, if you do bigger tires you will also want to regear. It never ends...

If you have 7" rims you can fit 32x11.50 tires on them.

Sounds more difficult than I bargained for. We installed the 4" Superlift on the 88 and it wasnt so bad, but I like the look of the lift kit. I wasnt asking to be talked out of it . I just wanted to know stability wise how it would be.

The higher you lift it the less stable it will be. In terms of installation difficulty the BJ spacers are way easier to install than a bracket lift and also provide more suspension travel.

I you are set on the bracket lift go for it. Post pics when you are done, we love pics.

Some people like things because they look cool. I happen to be one of those people. I appreciate the advice. But, I did get this money just for a lift kit. If there was a 3" kit out there I would just buy that. I like the way these trucks look lifted, and if you call it "wasting money" than thats fine. Who knows I might get some rims and 33x12.50's in the same order...it could happen.

Could you link me to a good set of Ball Joint spacers? Also what do you recommend I do to the rear to level it out?

You can fit 33X10.5s with no lift. Any 4" kit with little 30" tires will look very stupid.

Those kits have issues. They shift around so fall out of alignment, bend, put more stress on the suspension, don't increase suspension travel, sometimes cause driveline vibes, etc... Most of us have moved away from them.

Your money is better spent on gears, lockers, some but not a lot of lift, and armor.

Otherwise, plan to put on 33's, wider rims (you can't use stock with a 4" kit or a 33" tire) appropriate gears, and lockers. This will set you back pretty far and you will have a good looking but rather tippy truck.

I'd say take the advice here and skip the 4" lift. You'll be happy you did. That money can be spent on better things which will make your truck more capable and fun to drive.
