1986 22re Intermittent B.s.
I have a 1986 22re 4runner. It has 193,000 miles on it, i have owned it since 160k, and until about a month ago, it ran like a top, perfect. Then, it started running badly when there was a lot of moisture/precipitation. So I replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires. This did absolutely nothing. The truck still seemed to run ĊĊĊĊty in the rain and perfect in the dry. After about a month of that, it started to run badly in the dry and wet, but only sometimes. It either ran perfect or ĊĊĊĊty.
Then, as it started to get colder here in saint louis, the problem got worse. The truck would start, but when i put it in first and tried to take off, it would either die or hop very badly. If i got to 2nd gear, 3rd gear, same thing, just a huge loss of power, followed by intolerable hopping and jolting. Whats even more strange is that if i held the clutch half way in when it started to hop, it would go back on track and i could then let the clutch all the way out and finish whatever gear i was in. I also replaced the cold start injector, thinking maybe that would do the trick. The injector was filthy, but replacing it fixed nothing. I need some pro toyo help, anybody got any ideas?? Thanks

mine wants to do the same thing some times mainly when it's raining. but i just drive it and it eventually stops. if i start it up and drive it away even after letting it warm up for 10 minutes sometimes when it's raining it does what you are describing but i keep on driving. then once i go park. and go to class and come back out it runs perfect. it's weird. i had the head gasket done at 125,000 cause it was leaking. but it has still done what you described yours is doing. mine did it before the head gasket replacement and after it but not as much . before the head gasket replacement my truck would just cut out completely and die while i was doing 55 on the interstate with it raining. and i know what was causing that it was the head gasket, i have no idea what is causing the stumbling and bumbling. like i said once i drive it even if it's about a mile then park it. and come back to it in an hour. it runs perfect with no hesitation or anything. check under your oil cap for a white milky substance, and you might wanna also check the coolant reservoir for loss of coolant or brown coolant. i check mine just to make sure the head gasket aint going again. but i havent tried to push the clutch in like you did. mine hasnt done it for a while though. sometimes it will do it a tiny bit on a hot day.

my 95 did the same thing, a few weeks after it started doing the thing where it would drive like crap in the rain, I found out my gas tank was leaking. $400 + a new fuel pump bracket later it started acting like a real vehicle again.

Thanks For The Help
Thanks for the news, the Yota has actually been runing great for the past month, but i am weary about trucks that fix themselves. It just doesnt make any sense. I know my gas tank isnt leaking, but i might try replacing the fuel pump the next episode i have. But from my experience, if the fuel pump is bad, its a constant problem, right? I also have had it checked out by a very well trusted mechanic, and the truck left him very confused. He has owned and operated his own mechanic shop for 30 years, and has no answers for me. Its crazy, but i guess i will just keep driving it because i love it.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
