Yet another gear ratio topic. 4.37 ?
So I got a welded diff from a buddy to put in the rear of my 84 4runner. We put it in drove around in the mud in the backyard for a bit and all seemed well until we hit the pavement (I know, I know, no 4wd on dry pavement, but it was just around the small block i live on to get back into the dirt alley). My truck pulls to the right and feels like the parking brake is on. I asked him again if the 3rd was a 4.10 and he swears up and down that it is and he never took them out except to weld them. I checked the gear code on his truck and sure enough G292 (4.10's) I then checked the teeth on the other diff he had this one paired up with that is now laying in his garage and it had 41 on the ring and 10 on the pinion (4.10's). I checked the 3rd I removed from my truck and it is also a 4.10. I put the rig on stands, marked the rear driveline and marked the tire, I begin to spin the tire. I go around 10 times, the driveline goes around 43.75 times. Now correct me if I'm wrong but that is a 4.375 gear. Is it possible that he is right and it is a 4.10 still? I know he was running this diff and the other one I inspected earlier today together and he did not have any problems. I pulled the driveline off it to check the color code. No paint left to check. Anything else I can to to verify the ratio of this 3rd member short of pulling it back off? Thanks.

Well I will take it off tomorrow and count the teeth then. I'll post back when I find out. Thanks again.
Some more information: I had the truck in 4hi, hubs locked in with both front wheels jacked off the ground. When I turn one of the front wheels, the one on the other side goes backwards like normal, but the driveshaft does not turn. It moves about a half inch like it is going to start turning but then stops. Do I need to do this with one or both wheels on the ground for the front? I assumed I could do it the same as the rear.

Well I pulled it off and sure as it's a 4.375 3rd. 8 teeth on the pinion and 35 on the ring. Good news is I'm rebuilding my front axle this weekend and I located a 4.37 ring and pinion for 30 bucks.
