Winterize my 1985 4runner...
OK i have an 1985 4runner SR5 with about 112000 orginal miles, I purchased it fixed it up and am converting it to my DD for the winter.
It is originally a North Dakota truck then spent a few years in Roseau Mn which if you don't know is pretty much Canada and very cold. It was in an accident and sat for 1 year. I picked it up fixed it and have been driving it ever since. It runs awesome gets 20-22 miles per gallon with BFG mud terrains and has hardly any rust. I decided to sell my 98 and go down to one car so this one is getting a the POR(15) treatment, body carnage fixed and a new Macco paint job for the winter. What other maintenance should i perform on the truck to ease it back into the blistering cold?
I have a new clutch, head gasket, plugs wires, air filter, battery, drive belts...(all done by previous owner except the battery and belts by me).
The quirks the truck has is sometimes when it is started the idle dips down immediately after starting then goes up and is fine, sometimes it will stay low and once in a great while it will stall. This only happens after it is started and if i rev the engine it is fine.
Also there seems to be squeal up front when i am in reverse. It doesn't happen in 1st or 2nd (3rd and forth it is two loud to tell). It does occasionally leak from the front passenger knuckle, but not excessively and it has to sit for a few days to make a drip.
So what should i do to winterize this truck so that i can feel comfortable that it will start in the morning and get me back and forth to work? I have about $1000 to spend but the more i can save the better. The left over cash will go into an account for if the truck breaks down.
THANKS
I forgot to mention i will be missing my 80's decals... and they will be on my Christmas list, but might have to wait until next year.

Oh, you've been tempted!!!
I am in the middle of repairing all the rust and re-painted it. Just got my patches welded in tonight for the drivers side and the passengers side will be on next week.
It has NEVER left me stranded during blizzards down here! =)
PS: Only a 6 hour drive =)

You've got way more money into your truck then i have into mine, it wouldn't be fair deal.
Stop temping me! Plus mine doesn't have enough camo on it for you
HA Plus you should wait until after i fix the body carnage and the paint on before you start making offers!!

Still tempting you...
I do have a lot into it. I have had it since high school. But now that I am almost out of college and will be able to afford a 2nd vehicle soon, I will want one to turn into a trail rig and well an 85 would be perfect. Ok heres the deal, we meet half way (3 hours for both of us). You give me $500 and your 85 and Ill give you my 88. Hows next weekend for ya? Oh and I have to keep my tires because they arent even paid off yet!
On the real topic, have you looked for vacuum leaks? Every time I have one they do funky things to my idle. and make SURE that if there are any rust spots on there they get fixed before the snow hits. Do you guys use salt up there?

More salt then you can imagine. No i haven't what is the best method to detect leaks? I'm about to run some Techron through the system to clean the injectors.
As far as rust spots all will be sanded down and POR15 on both sides of the sheet metal, then painted over.

Alright well looks like you got the rust covered. We use a lot of salt down here too and I cant stand it. It works but it also eats my truck. For the vacuum leaks, I have heard a couple different things such as using propane. Use the propane around the engine and if the idle goes up you found the area where the leak is. Not sure how safe this is. I just keep looking and looking till I find it.
