Timing Chain Tensioners
Does anyone know where to get the metal tensioners other than engine builder? I have a friend who is in the middle of a build and heard about these. Now he wants them before he finishes…
Thanks,

They're actually metal backed chain guides, and actually just the one guide on the passenger side, I think. There's one tensioner and you can't get it in metal. I think only engnbldr has them, and he can usually get them shipped out the same day and to you pretty fast if you get right on it.

Thanks for the info. I forwarded the link to him. I will be using Engnbldr's kits for the 2 Yota 2wd's I now have. My 86 4Runner is almost back on the road, and once that is done I am starting the 87 2wd rebuild for a daily driver. It also needs an auto to 5 speed conversion...might as well. So far I have about $550 including towing for 50 miles. Got to do this one right as I will depend on it. The 84 is waiting on a new flywheel and a new crank (per Engnbldr).
Thanks both of you...

I'm trying to figure out everyone's fascination with metal backed guides. They go out, what, every 150-200xxx miles? There are more problems than the guides at that point, water pump and front seals. While you are fixing all of that, you could just replace the guide while you were in there.
Also, the guides are kind of a designed weak link. When you replace them with metal backed guides, the tensioner and/or chain become the weak link. I'd rather have the guide wear, than break the chain...
Just my .02.
