Rear fender rust: What to do about it? welds are rusting through to outer body

I've seen videos of fiberglass repair. I thought about just cutting it and doing a fender flare. Just looking for ideas.

Body shop estimates have come in around $800 to weld in new sheet metal and re-paint.

What end results are you looking for??

fiberglass make it smooth and paint as good as anything.

weld in pieces your self do all the prep work your self and have it painted.

Looks pretty high will a flare cover it ??

Even then it will still need to be fixed so it just doesn`t get worse.

around here holes in the beds are common as long as pieces are not sticking out away from the bed your ok

that's a pickup truck? on the early 4runners you can access that area from inside, to some degree.

i would not use fiberglass, it won't last... just cut it out with a die grinder, and replace the area with sheet metal.

be careful about warping the panels from heat, you probably need a low-voltage mig welder with gas, i'm guessing, to keep the splatter down.

that area could be worse than it looks, be prepared for the worst... is there an autobody class at your local community college?
