Rear axle/differential problems
So i just bought an 84 toyota, and have been reconditioning everything, its sat for a really long time. The rear diff is making a lot more noise than it should, so far ive disconnected the driveshaft, what else do i need to do to pull the differential apart? If anyone has any useful walkthroughs related to installing/uninstalling gears i would really appreciate it.
Should i take the axle off my truck or can this work be done under the truck? Right now ive got it on blocks in my driveway with about 3 feet of working room under it.

On the Toyota's it's a removable 3rd member so it's pretty easy to remove and take to the work bench. To remove the diff you'll also need to remove the 4 bolts for the backing plates, unclip the parking brake cables, If you're removing the axle shafts completely unhook the brake lines, remove the bolts holding the 3rd onto the axle housing. If I missed something someone that knows more than me should chime in.

In order to remove the third member i just need to undo the 12 (or whatever it is) bolts that hold it in and pull it out? or do i need to remove the axles too?

You have to pull the axles out enough to to free them from the 3rd member. That's why you have to remove the bolts from the backing plates and the parking brake cables. If you leave the brake line attached you'll need to rotate the axle a bit when your pulling it out to avoid kinking the brake line.

Anyone had any experience with stripped bolts on the 3rd memeber? i was able to get them all off, low down they have teeth but up high they are REALLY stripped/mangled/nightmare-ish.
Whats the best way to fix that?

They are just a stud with threads on both ends. Any autoparts store can replace them for you. To pull your third off you only need to pull the axle shafts out about 3" or so. Make sure you support them though. Don't just let the shaft rest on the seal. More than likely it'll be a pain to get loose from the housing. A rubber hammer on the pinion flange works to break it loose.

is there an easy way to pull them out or just take vice grips to the end?
Also its reverse threaded correct? turn it clockwise to loosen it?

No they have regular threads. More than likely they are seized up in the housing. You might have an interesting time getting them out. Another option to putting studs back in is this... I have these and they are a lot more stout and easier to change when you break one off on the trail.
