I have a clunk sound in my drive train that I need help identifying. Stock 85 4runner. At first I thought it was related to the clutch, because I hear (and feel) it when I engage/disengage the clutch, in any gear. But then it happens too sometimes during breaking. I leaned over the back bedrails today with my neighbor driving, and we decided that it was coming from the back end of the drive line or the rear end. It sounds like a "clunk", and sometimes is louder than other times, and I can feel it through the truck when it happens too.

The we put the truck in gear, no break, engine off, and rocked the truck back and forth using the front wheel. It was clunking on the forward stop as well as the backwards stop.

I think the noise and feeling are familiar to me, from some of my past pickups, but it was probably never as loud as this one so I never did anything about it before. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? Normal? Thanks in advance.

Two things you might want to check are the the slip yoke on the rear driveshaft (is it sticking and in need of lube?) and maybe your rear U bolts, make sure they're tight. That's all that comes to mind ---------Hans

I just got a 90 runner for cheap. The reason was a loud clunk from the rear. PO could not id. Took apart the rear brakes, took out axles, found a bad wheel bearing. Little machine work and a new bearing clunk gone, and off to other PO missdoings.

probably something sticking in the drum brakes. i used to have a mystery clunk when backing up the first time of the day.

just another thought, Is anything leaking from the radiator/transmission? I had a clunk not too long ago, then saw that my radiator was busted and leaking everywhere. My transmission cooling line ruptured in the radiator, so the coolant and AT fluid were all mixed together. I can't explain it too well, but that is what caused my driveline clunk. just another thing to check if you cant figure it out, when it happened to me, my first thought were the u joints also.
