HEad question (22re)

I picked up my 4runner.Bad news is that the headgasket is blown.Im going to rebuild the head because the PO told me the bottomend was done before he got it so its somewhat fresh.Im not going to be running the motor for more then ayear but i want it to run good while its in there. While the heads off i plan on redoing the valves,Adding a cam, replace anything i can find thats worn, and try to get more power.

Im thinking about having the head milled. Not only to clean up the surface but to raise compression some. I think this will aid in turning big tires and maybe driving on the highway or moutain roads. My question with this is how much can i really mill the head. I will add a cam, header, intake,it will be ported and polished so i should be taking full advantage of the compresion change.

What are some other things i can do while im inthere to get some more power out of the motor? Im keeping it N/A because my old turbo 4runner is the reason i can change motors like its nothing. Any cam thats better or may give me more power then another. My dad keeps telling me get an RV cam? Any and all input about the head rebuild would be great.

Off the head topic....Has anyone run an MSD 6AL on a 22re?How did it work out for you?Worth it?

Thanks
Russell

check out engnbldr for cams, both the 261 and 268 are good cams. Do a search I have info on here about his cams.

I wouldn't mill the head too much, the motors already have decent compression.. I would cam, O/S vavles, header and call it good. Intake and such havent been proven to be necessary, all that work and its still a 22RE. Dont forget to add a new timing chain....

If you mill the head much, you will need to get an adjustable timing sprocket.

Here is the best read I have ever come across in regards to machine work on 22re

I milled my head 20 thousandths. I also bought the LC adjustable cam gear. I've heard for every 10 thousandths shaved, you are 1 degree retared. I've also heard that 22RE's tend to like being advanced 2-3 degrees so I ended up with 5 degrees of advancement.

There are some small dimples on the bottom of the head, I've heard not to mill the head so those dimples can't be seen.

EDIT - I went with EB's 268 cam. I haven't drove the truck yet (just gettting it buttoned up from the rebuild) so no comments on it.

wow that is a good thread.I picked up all the gaskets and that RV cam my dad was talking about. 268 i belive it is. I plan on now getting a cam gear. That write up was full of great info. The kit i got offers up to ..040 pistons so i may end up with that stuff. Im in colorado so i think that it might be worth it to spend some extra money on the motor because gears will be waiting a few months.
