f/r third members interchangeable?

anybody care to educate me on the topic? i am building my 4runner over a couple of stages, and the second stage wont be for another couple of years. i was wondering if i could put a truetrac in the rear now, and in a couple of years move it to the front if i decide on a selectable locker for the rear. anyone? i dont know the exact mechanics of the third members, but i could see how they might spin in different directions, making my swapping plan harder or impossible. thnx in advance, bk

Totally swapable (up to 1985). We have a rear V6 from a 91 in the front of our 85 truck.

Older landcruisers can swap front/rear (but not with 8" trucks)

thanks david. i havent developed stage 2 plan very much yet, but that might help. right now stage 2 also includes re-gearing, so i might not be saving too much work after all. good to know that i can at least re-use the hardware.

Careful .... the thirds are swappable. However, there is a problem taking the truetrac from rear to front. Because its a gear driven limited slip it will require some modification I believe to make it work in the front. Hopefully someone will see this and see that I can only muster up half the story and fill us in on the rest.

True. While the diffs are identical, they turn in opposite directions; the front diff turns backwards utilizing the coast side of the ring & pinion gears in forward motion. As such, Tru-Track LSDs are not supposed to be interchanged front to rear because they are not designed to run backwards. While it (probably) won't damage them, their operation won't be to original specs.

Ok quick question related here..I may just be new but are the gears the same?Im looking at ring and pinions and only find them listed for the rear. Im about pick up lockers and gears and was puzzled just to see one ring and pinion listed.

Thanks

V6 ring and pinions are different than 4 cyl ring and pinion.

But, you can swap the entire pumpkins.
