dash gage swap?
my 85 has only the speedo gage and i would like to have a tach gage as well. i like the original factory look better than installing an aftermarket tach gage. what i want to know is, what would it take to swap my gage display? would i need the entire dash with the tach/speedo gage, or can i just swap out the gage display itself while keeping my original dash? is there any other difference between the speedo gage and the speedo/tach gage displays?

89silverpu.. thx for the tips...
did a seach again but still couldnt find what i was looking for. i'll try to narrow my question down a bit. does any 84/85 trucks have a factory tach on the cluster display? if so, can it be straight swapped into an 85 truck to replace the speedo only cluster display?

the only issue with a guage from an auto is that you will have an ect indicator that will serve no purpose instead of the battery voltmeter that comes on the manual transmission model. it will work fine other than that. you do not want a guage from a 6cyl, and if you have a 22r you will need a tach wire. no problems with an inclinometer either. there are tons of threads on this stuff, which is probably why you havn't had many responses.

i think you can buy a voltmeter new from a dealership for about $50 if you really want it. but it would be easier to just get another from a mt truck. look around on this site and others for people parting out trucks. find a fsm, it will give you the pinouts for the connections on the back of the cluster. simply find the pin for the tack and see if there is a wire there. if not, like on my truck, splice into the capped off plug hanging off of the coil.

the tach wire he is talking about just a regular wire run from the tach to the coil, nothing you can buy at the dealership. Some rigs need it, some do not. Wont really know until you plug the cluster in, and see if it works. My 86 4Runner did NOT need the spcial wire run.
