I just bought a well used 84 toyota pickup with a 22r, in the hopes of rebuilding the engine after the timing chain apparently slipped. I have removed both the exhaust and intake manifolds, unbolted the front 12mm bolt into the block, and tried nearly every damned thing I could unscrew and unscrewed it but the cylinder head will not lift off. i've never torn down a 22r before, and the chilton manual is not a big help. The only thing I can think of is that below the rocker arm are 2 big allen wrench bolts/washers things that I'm wondering if they lock down the top to the block. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here. Your help is greatly appreciated. I would love to get this thing off.

DO not touch the allen head screws!! That has nothing to do with it. Did you unbolt the heater pipe from the back of the head?

Did you remove the bolt thats located in the head in front of the cam gear ?, it sometimes gets over looked.

have you tried giving it a love tap from a dead blow hammer. I've had some be stuck on there pretty good and the hammer works every time.

Btw the 12mm bolt does not go into the block, it bolts into the timing cover.

Thanks guys, but everything is off, and I'm concerned someone may have used some serious gasket glue to fix it on. Heater bolts are off, front cam bolt out. Timing chain cover bolt out. Both manifolds out. The question now is, if all the bolts are out, what is the next step? Any thoughts?

did you remove the bolt that is toward the front. There is a small pool of oil that covers the bolt and is missed. The bolt is vertical in orientation and just below the cam gear (somewhere around there you should find it). This i believe helps hold the timing chain cover, not sure if you removed that already.

"if your absolutly shure you have all the bolts pulled", like that other dude said, a love tap with a dead blow or big rubber mallot usually works on stuff like that for me.

yeah, the timing chain cover bolt is out, and I just gave it a love tap and am about to give it a hate tap if nothing else works. Thoughts?

Yeah, tap it a little harder. Make sure it's a rubber mallet and not a hammer. Don't wanna break anything.

I just got the head off, finally, after talking the handle from my jack that is rubberized and putting it gently into the distributer hole and levered it gently up. I appreciate all the help, and will definitely use this forum again,

I have a bar of steel that i bolt to the exhaust side to help pop them loose, I guess I work on to many old trucks lol!

Thanks ya'll. Next step is trying to decide whether or not to replace the valves. There is definite carbon buildup, but I don't know whether or not a steel brush will do the work, or whether they need to be refinished. any thoughts?
