building a 22r, got a reman 22r head and cant figure out if its pre or post 85
ok so im dropping a 22r into my truck. bored .030 over, new domed pistons The guy before me did the bottom end work so im hoping for the best there but he had receipts so im assuming its fine. the motor was from an 84 4x4 4runner. the head that came with it has almost every thread stripped and doesnt look good. i picked up a NICE 22r head on craigslist some months ago and from sitting on a table is the exact height of the nasty head. im wondering if thats enough to tell me if its good to go or if theres another way to tell if its the later style head(which im hoping is NOT the case)
any info would be GREAT!~

yup thats a pre-85 head. BTW both would have the square intake holes, it's the 20R head that had the round intake holes.
basically your fine as long as your exhaust ports DO NOT look like this:

ok great! Thank you very much for the help guys i feel much better about the head now. its in GREAT shape will what looks to be all new parts, including valves, but the bottom surface looks like its been surfaced but has 2 or 3 tiny little knicks or scrapes in it. it doesnt look severe enough to interfere with the head gasket but i want a clean and clear conscious before i decide not to get it shaved again. advice? is there an easy way to know if its necessary or not? it sits flat on the floor with no warping.
thanks again!
thanks again!
