Hey guys i got an 84' with the 22r. For some reason everytime i chane my oil within 500 miles is turns jet black. The oil still has viscosity like the new oil it is, but its black as night. I checked my plugs thinking i might hvae started getting blowby and burning oil with combustion. But each spark plug is looking great....Any ideas?

Its probably because you have an old engine with a build up of sludge all through the system that mixes with the new oil and turns it black.

Try running some seafoam through your intake and gas tank. You've got to put 16 oz through a vacuum line and another 16 oz in the tank. Start it up 30 minutes later and the run it until the smoke disappears. That stuff works magic on nasty engines. No offense

Putting it in your gas tank will have absolutely no affect on the oil.

I don't have a can in front of me to read but I think you're suppose to pour a can in your crank case before you change the oil and let it run for a bit to clean the gunk out. Then drain and change the oil like normal.

I have been running seafoam in the crankcase and in the gas tank. I put it in for the first 2 oil changes and drove 1000 miles with fresh oil ans eweafoam, then changed the oil. Now im on a fresh batch of oil W/O seafoam, 500 miles in its black as anything.

Your probably still seeing the residual gunk coming out of the oil galleys and everything. Give it a little while and you'll probably start seeing better color.

yes the oil was black with the seafoam. and all of my oil filters weighed about 5lbs.

Pop the valve cover off and see how much sludge is in there...then post a picture for all of us to see. There was another member who had bad engine sludge (outlawmike) and was able to clean it up with ATF and many engine oil changes of Mobil 1. Search on this forum and you will find the thread.

I would but I litteraly just replaced the valve cover seal and re permatex everything. but I can tell you that there was no sludge. can, rocker arms and valve springs all were clean. I stuck my fingers in the small crevaces to feel for build up...there was none just black oil. I'm thinking my oil pan is gunked up at the bottom. I have a leaky oil pan seal too but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

You mentioned that there was black oil in the crevasses. Perhaps the clean oil is still flushing that out. It doesn't take much dirty oil to blacken fresh oil. You also said earlier that the oil is still good, it's just black. I'd wait a few oil changes and see if it gets better. If you don't have any sludge in the top I can't see how you would have a lot in the pan. I'd hate to see someone go thru all the work of puling the pan as it involves quite a bit more work.

If you can afford it, I would replace the filter every couple of weeks to prevent a clogged filter and starvation to necessary parts. Just a thought...

Does your engine have an EGR? On my '85 22RE, I had an exhaust manifold leak which caused excessive exhaust gas to be sucked thru the EGR. Also your EGR maybe stuck open.

I have an egr but I've desmogged the rest. I don't want to mess with that until I have block plates. SPARKS your right! I've had a new oil pan gasket for 2 weeks now and have been contemplating doing it just because it's going to take me an hour or so

good idea Ive been doing it every 1000 miles but ima cut it down to 700
