85 4runner, 22RE.....very well maintained. Genuine Toyota alternator is maybe 6 years old.

Today I was driving and smelled smoke. About the same time AT temp oil, charge, and E-brake dash lights start flashing. I popped the hood and noticed smoke coming from a thick-gauge cable that goes back to the alternator. The actual location of the wire melting is on the drivers side of the engine compartment where the cable appears to be split to another cable and held together by a bolt at a junction box. The whole junction box is shielded by a plastic box that is now melted. Anyone have any ideas on this? I took it to the mechanic and they state Toyota does not sell the junction box anymore so they may have to fabricate something.

just cut the wires back till you have some good wire then splice them back together. I bet the nut came loose and caused a bad connection and thats what made it get hot and melt.
