I bought my truck with 4.88's and 35's, but it has the 4.7 low range and lockers so for me, and the type of wheeling I do, its perfect. I can cruise out to the trail, get decent gas mileage, and when I need to crawl I use the 4 low.
Like others have said, you are either going to be in front of the rpm curve compared to stock, or behind it.
However, with saying that, if you like tall skinny tires, and want to swap over to 16" rims and do any mods needed to use the 16"'s, a 255/85/16 will be slightly taller than a 33 but not as tall as a 35". That set up, with 4.88's might be perfect. Just an idea.
Hello all,

Great site you guys have! There's a lot of good tech on here. I'm new to the forum, but not to Toyotas. Math is really your friend with this debate. If you plan on running 33"s with the 22r or 22re, gearing your axles to 4:88's actully puts you back to stock overall final drive.

This means that if you don't gear down to 4:88's with 33"s, you will use the motor's power more to over-compensate for the extra rolling mass. You will find yourself downshifting more often and running out 3rd when merging into trafic etc. In reality, the 33"s will rob your truck of usable power if you don't re-gear. You will find that your trail abilities will suffer as well...

what about for the 3.0????

it has like 50 more horsepower than the 22re??

im just asking the question..when i get my 3rd gen pickup it's gettin re-geared to 4.88's..wish they made like a 5.10 or something..like a happy medium between 4.88's and 5.29's..

the 3rd gen im lookin at is a '90 v6 5spd and already has a 4in lift on it..lol

the funny thing is that I have 4.88 gearing but I'm only running 31" tires. I can hit 90 easy on the freeway, My truck hauls butt! At the same time it just coasts right along at 65 or 70 no problem. If you live in San Diego and have ever driven up the 15 then you know how steep it is. I can climb up it in 5th gear at half throttle at I believe 2000 RPM's. Call me crazy but if I went with 33" tires I would go with the next gearing arrangement, 5.29's. I know, I know, you guys think its over kill but I wouldn't want to sacrifice my current performance just for bigger tires. Right now if I nail the throttle in
2nd from about 3,000 RPM's my tires chirp and the truck takes off. The look from people is priceless when they pull up next to you at a stop light where the lanes ahead merge and a 4 cylinder truck with 31" tires blows their doors off while getting rubber in 1st and 2nd gear. Also 1st gear is really low so my truck is also great if you're trying to creep along on some backwoods trail.

Half of the posts in this thread could be answered with a simple search.

4.56's would be fine but if you're going to do it, go with 4.88's.
I have 4.88's with 35's and I have zero complaints.

I think 4.10's were stock in 84. The 85 brochure shows the SR5 to have 4.10's and HR78 x 15 inch mud and snow tires. I thought they had a 31" tire option, but I guess not.
What size is HR 78 x 15?

Tire size and gearing is really personal choice and driving style. As someone mentioned earlier, you can run 31's with 4.88's, if that suits you. As someone else mentioned, you have to consider the engine pushing it, a stock 22r, 22re, 3.0, or a modified 22r with a 38 weber, cam, custom exhaust and header( my personal preference ).

I have mentioned this before, but here's my personal experience:
I have owned my truck twice, and 84 4runner SR5. When it was stock, I put on 31"'s and it drove fine in the city, but it did bog down on the highway. I pulled a small trailer with it once, and it wasn't fun. I remember that trip.

By chance, I found the truck on here, and it had been completely redone by the person I bought it back from. He put in a new engine with all of the mods, regeared it to 4.88's, and had 35's on it when I picked it up. Wow! I couldn't believe how well it ran. I drove it back from Minnesota to Texas and easily cruised down the highways and backroads and went through the hills in Arkansas. Basically, with the new engine and mods, but with bigger tires and lower gearing, it was like a new truck. Oh, and the MPG increased!
