488 gears with 33s

if i put 33s on my toyota will i have to re gear it or will it be fine ?

you defanitly want to gear it either 4.56 or 4.88 depending on your driveing and intentions but I would go with 4.88s as a matter of fact I did 4.88s with 32s and 3 in sl.
runs great pulls good up hill and flat.

i think im going to go with 488
im gonna be doing some offroading but its my daily driver as well

i had 4.88's and 33's on my 86 with a 22 re and it done great on and off road

I'm on 33's without regearing (stock 4.1) and it works fine, but it's slow going. Had 4.88's on the old truck and it was better, but not enough better for me to spend $600 yet.

4.88 with 33's is ideal, not absolutely needed but VERY helpful. Not only does it help you on the street/highway, but it also allows you to creep slower if you need to when the trail gets nasty. You can burn up a clutch trying to go slow over tough terrain.

i blew my stocker clutch (hotspotted the flywheel) in less than 4 months after wheeling new SS TSL 33's on my stock rear diff.
I regeared, put in an Aussie, replaced the clutch with a Marlin super HD and now the thing is mean! MEAN! My new clutch LOVES the 4.88's!

I personally would not want 4.88's with 33's, I would run them with 35's or 36's. I would rather get my trail gearing in the transfer case and maintain a better power range for the highway. I have no problems going 70-75 on the freeway in 5th gear with 33's and 4.10s. On bigger hills I do need to downshift into 4th, but I can still accelerate up hills.

I won't have my dual cases setup till next spring, so in the meantime I am wheeling with the stock gearing. So far I've been just fine on the rocks... Takes a lot of finesse with the clutch, and picking the right lines. But its not as bad as I had imagined. I'll be replacing the clutch when I install the dual cases in the spring.

I am getting 18-20mpg with my setup, what kind of millage do those with 4.88s get on 33's? I would imagine it is less being that you are higher up in the rpm range.

i have 3.7 on my 33" tires...and max speed at fwy its around 75'ish,
need to move the the first two lanes to leave the big boys drive by...

im getting 17-19 mpg.. 5speed neutral its a bliss!

I'm on 33s and 4.56s and I do just fine. Speedometer is almost dead on too.

I have 33s with 4.11 gears. It's ok for light trails, but for the nasty hill climbs, I wish I had 4.88s like in the FJ40. 4.56 will put you still a little on the short side of how it felt with stock tires, but is an ok ratio as 4.88 will put you on the other side. IMO, if you're gonna spend the money, go a little low and have the 4.88s.

IMO 4.88 + 33's = perfection. Power, speed, better crawl, speedo, you can actually use 5th gear and accelerate at the same time.
I'm on my 3rd SFA 4runner and 3rd set of 4.88's.
More pep than with original gearing and original tire size is what makes me continue to use this ratio.
I doubt MPG is affected much. After all you are driving well within your power range and don't have to mash on the gas so much to get up to speed.

If you do the math for your stock configuration, you need to run 4.56 with 31" tires and 4.88 with 33" tires to get the speedo back to showing the correct speed. That also means that the powerband for the engine will be back to where it needs to be for driving.

Also means your odometer will be correct so you can really claim 17+ mpg accurately. Otherwise, you need a GPS to verify that you're really still pulling that good of mileage. I know with 3.90's and 33's that I was nowhere close to that but I did pull a consistent 19.5 once the 4.88's went in.

I tend to agree with e-typer, and its not just because of his taste in vehicle and color.
I bought my truck with 4.88's and 35's, but it has the 4.7 low range and lockers so for me, and the type of wheeling I do, its perfect. I can cruise out to the trail, get decent gas mileage, and when I need to crawl I use the 4 low.
Like others have said, you are either going to be in front of the rpm curve compared to stock, or behind it.
However, with saying that, if you like tall skinny tires, and want to swap over to 16" rims and do any mods needed to use the 16"'s, a 255/85/16 will be slightly taller than a 33 but not as tall as a 35". That set up, with 4.88's might be perfect. Just an idea.
