22re missing and power loss...I need ideas
So i recently bought a 1985 4runner and have been fixing little things here and there. 22re 5 speed
The problem started a couple days ago. The truck is missing and it has less power. I swapped the VAFM out with one I had no change. I changed out the wires, cap and rotor, it seemed to be a little better then it went back to the way it was. I swapped out the ignitor and coil and still no change.
Can any lead me in the wright direction on this so i can try and get it running better?
Thanks

I was having a similar problem with my 89. I just put new plugs/wires, new distributor cap, new ecu, injectors, fuel rail and filter, and none of it worked. After all of that time and money it took a pair of pliers and a screw driver and adjusted the throttle and just reved it up a little.

Good idea. Try that one. If you don't know how to or don't want to tackle that first, try cleaning out your manifold and engine with a little sea foam. Suck a little through the vacuum hose and mix some in with an oil change and run some through the fuel system. If you've never used it, don't be alarmed when it smokes like a freight train, it will go away after 10-20 minutes and if you decide to mix it with the oil, change the oil again after 500 miles. For amounts, follow directions on the can.

The problem is new...I have driven over 800 miles with the truck since i have it. I have tested the 3 vafm that I have all good and the coil good.
Does anyone know how to test the ignitor or is it even testable?
I have tried 2 different ones and i get the same results.
What are the chances that this could be a fuel delivery problem?

It could be a fuel issue. Have you replaced the fuel filter? You've been saying at around a high rpm that it starts lacking power. If it isn't getting enought fuel then it may be running lean. If that doesn't work, you may have an injector sticking.

I will try seafom in the next couple days if the motor makes it. It has started missing more frequently. I just reasd the FSM on how to test the ignitor today so i am going to try that step next.
I wouldnt think its timing as the dist has not moved and is still tight(unless the dist itself is going out). Which I will be testing that out as well.

Bad injector harness connnection or a fuel problem. Change the fuel filter. It's a PITA but at least it's cheap. The electric issues are harder to chase down. Try playing with the harness around the fuel injectors with slightly elevated rpm's and see if you can cause anything to happen or take a multimeter and start checking continuity.

I forgot to mention and it just popped in my mind. The fuel injector connectors (when they get some age on them) may start to get brittle and crack. The clips are bad to break off. You may have a bad connection on one of your injectors. The best thing to do is to check your connections. If you wanna get a really good look at them you should probably pull your upper intake off. It might look like a lot of work but it's not that bad.
