Ok I posted over at MUD but I think we are missing something.
Here is where I am.

I replaced my timing chain on my 1984 22r. Old chain was fine I just needed to reseal the cover, as it was leaking. Its a double row chain.

After putting it all together it was backfiring gas out of the top of the carb.
One thing is suspect. I put the two shiny links on the crank mark instead of the cam mark, and the single shiny mark on the cam mark. Does that matter?

With the crank at "0" the cam mark is at about 11:30, and the rotor points to #1.

What is going on here? I'm stuck.

Is your distributor timing set correctly? It almost sounds like the distributor is 180 degrees out or off a tooth or two.

Generally, backfiring out the carb is the result of the timing being too far advanced. Backfiring out the exhaust the result of the timing being too far retarded.

Make sure you got the spark plug wires in the right order, when I did my chain had backfire problems, turns out I had #2 and #3 swapped. Just a thought.

At tdc the rockers for #1 cyl should be a little loss and the distributor should be pointing at 10 oclock position.

4Crawler's instructions helped me after my headgasket replacement on my 22RE:

59. Install distributor
Install with engine at TDC for a 22R or 5° BTDC for a 22RE/REC/RET
Set the distributor at the 12 o-clock position
Upon insertion, it'll turn ~35° CCW and the timing will be close
