what is needed to swap a 22re into my 83?
As you can see in my sig, I have an '83 with a 20r and a 4 speed. I like the idea of having fuel injection not to mention a little more displacement and an extra cog with a 5 speed. What needs to be changed to accommodate this engine?

the wiring and fuel routing will be the hardest part. your truck rolled off the line with a 22R and 5 speed, so you've been cheated by a previous owner by the sound of things.
a 22RE and *early* 5 speed('81-83) is a direct physical bolt in(have to wire the computer and sensors, and run hi pressure fuel lines and pump for the EFI), a better, stronger late model 5 speed needs to have the crossmember relocated back about 4" and the drivelines resized.

in my opinion ... the earlier style (84) is the best to install .
I did one just a while back
and it actually was quite easy ... because of the early style , the speed sensor is not necessary , If you go with the newer 85-88 / 89 The speed sensor is incorperated in the speedo , and will need to be included .
With the earlier style , there really is only about 7 wires , and 2 relays ... quite simple ... the hard part is finding one ...
