Ok so I have decidedwhen I get the new trans I'm going to upgrade and get rid of the L52!! Here is my dillema I know that the W56 is a very good trans but for one thing I'm curious what the differences are in the years of the W56?? Marlin sells a W56-A, B, C, D, and E??? I see that different years of use is why they are different but is there anything else?? Is one better than the other? If so why what's different? Next question is could I put the R151F turbo trans in without a turbo engine? The engine is just going to be a carbed 22r it is the late model post 85 block! And if I can would this be an even better choice than the W56? Pleas help I am trying to get a list of stuff together for the upcoming mods and right now I'm stuck on tranny choice! Oh ya and on the R151F there are two different first gear ratios I assume it's basically giving a granny gear but does this affect the ratios of the other gears as well??

The different W56 models mainly have to do with whether they are set up for a top shift t-case (A and B as I recall) or forward shift t-case (C, D...). So if you already have a forward shift t-case, then get a W56 to match that, otherwise, any model would work, might need a block off plate if using a top shift case with a fwd. shift trans.

On the R151F, there is a lower 1st gear option, but good luck finding one. I think they only come from Australia and I know Marlin could not get one a few years back when I had him rebuild an R151F for me. Also the R151F will require you have a 23 spline t-case (or convert a 21 spline version).

So basically the W56 is good enough huh? That's what I needed!!! And thanks for the info on the difference but now I have another stupid question? How do I tell if my transfer case is forward or top shift?? I assume the forward just pulls a rod out to shift in kinda like the ford right???

Basically, where does the t-case shifter come out of? If it is on top of the t-case, then top shift, if it comes out forward of the t-case, then it is forward shift.

If memory serves me: you will have some difference in lengths between the L series and the W series that will need to be dealt with in order to swap, not a big deal just something to research. The W56B is a bit stronger in the set up, it was intended for the high hp output of the EFI set up. The W series will serve you well, and the the options for dual t-case set ups are cheaper than the R series.

You can use any of the R series but will have to source a bellhousing. Only two bolt patterns were used in the trannies and engine by Toyota at time, so some of the Celicas and turbo trucks would have the needed bellhousing. Advance Adaptors and maybe Inchworm may have aftermarket bellhousings.

Sounds like you got a good setup coming.
