Yup, I too have been fooled by a leaky header until closer examination found a leak. Seems that worn adjustment screws are the most common un-adjustable valve noise culprit.

I Spent ages chasing that noise on my old hilux and affter the 3rd tappet adjustment I worked it out.

To see if that is what yours is doing just loosen the rocker cover and maybe lift it a bit when its running and the annoying "clack clack" should stop.

Hopefully I may have just saved some fustration for some ppl and some burnt valves from overadjusting."

- Could this be true? Sounds possible, as there has been no change in the noise with every attempt, and the rapping always seems to be coming from the same place.
Just adjusted valves and got same noise. Believe I tightened the valve cover too much. Half a turn of loosening and the clack-clack disappeared.

Both my trucks have pretty noticeable valve train clatter. I have gotten used to it and kinda like it now. Let's me know the hamster under the hood is still alive.

Even with all brand new valve train parts(cam, rocker arms, adjusting screws ect.) after a while as the adjusting screws and the rocker arms clearnace increases from "wear" the noise will return. Toyota i believe specifys to adjust valve clearance every 30k miles for 22r engines. Exhuast manifold leaks are also a common misconception of "valve tappet."

I have an 86 4runner with 265k on the original motor and i've adjusted the valves on it a total of 7 times. For me though i love the "tappety tap tap click clack" of the 22r....

Well, this is kinda old news, 'cos I dealt with all of this back in August of 2011.

But what had happened was this - when I took it all apart, I discovered that the adjustment screw and valve stem end on #2 had been completely HAMMERED, so no amount of adjusment wuz gonna do squat. I happened to have a much lower milage rocker assembly on hand, so in with that, the new cam and timing chain set, done and quiet!
Further on down the road a Weber and and a new driveline, and now we have quiet, a bit more power, and smoooooth. Life is good!

And yes, I adjust my valves at least every 30k, and as this new setup is still settlin' in after 5k, I'll prolly do it again just for good measure.
