shocks

I just put a 2" lift on my 81 and I have land cruiser shocks on it and the work perfect for road driving but they limit travel... so I am looking for some new shocks that will ride comfortable and have decent travel so Im thinking bilsteins for the rear and something for the front I dont have access to modify the front mounts other than bolt stuff or just run procomp es9000 all around... what do you guys recommend or what other options are there?

if I go bilsteins I can use the 10" travel in the rear
Collapsed Length 15.91"
Extended length 25.93"

I hit the bump stops @ 16" in the rear and they would work perfectly
but in the front I hit the bump stops @ 13.5 so the shock would hit before the bump stop and damage the shock.

How do you use your truck?

What are the measurements of the shocks you are using now? Specifically up front.

Refresh my memory, the stock front is stem top and loop bottom? That's how it looks in my FSM, but frankly I haven't probably seen too many "stock" setups.

you can extend your front bump stops limit compression.

front shocks are for a 77 LC and measure 22.75" extended 14.00" collapsed 8.75" travel
the truck is my DD so I want a comfortabe ride but when I go wheeling I want to be able to have fun and not worry about braking thinkgs if I can prevent it...

if I cant find any good shocks that mount up I guess I will ty to find someone near me that can cut/weld for me and Ill get some 12" TG shock hoops and run 12" bilsteins up front... anybody in south west CO want to help?

The reason I asked how you use your truck is because you may want different shocks depending on what you do with it. For instance Doetsch Tech makes some really soft shocks that would do well for rock crawling but probably not so much for go fast type stuff. Also, if you're on the road 98% of the time, those soft shocks might be more of a PITA than the offroad benefit is worth. I also asked about the stem mount on top because that will limit your choices a lot. You could use a bolt on solution like this:

but that also takes an inch or so of your space which becomes somewhat self defeating.

You say that you have 13.5 inches compressed now but the LC shocks are 14 inches. Do they hit now as currently set up? Also, is it worth it to do a mod that requires fab help and $ to get that extra 1 1/4 inch of travel? If you are going for 12 inch travel shocks make sure the hardware is going to fit under there. Mine barely fit on my SA conversion with a 1 inch BL in place. Finally if you do go the new shock mount route, consider the Ford shock towers referenced here:

My suggestion is if the LC shocks are working well for you, just extend the bumpstops as ocdropzone suggested.

A pic of mine just barely squeezed in there with a 1 inch body lift. Yes they could have been mounted a bit lower on the frame but not much.
