Ok so what is the truth about performance cams?

Ive done the search thing and couldn't get the low down. I have a 22R with no smog, 32/46 and did an engine rebuild about 15k easy miles ago. its a daily driver and drives very well but I am itching for some more power; for you cam guys, what do you think? is it worth the money?

it doesn't give you more power.

it moves the power band around.

the 261C cam from Engnbldr will put it from Idle-4500rpms...then the 268 takes it from about 1500 or so up to redline i believe.

i could definitely tell a difference between cam and no cam...but it's not THAT big of a boost..

if you want more power you'll want a motor swap.

best bang for your buck for you, would probably be the 7mge or 7mgte inline 6 supra motor..that'll make your power monkey happy

ya ive thought about the I6 for a while, or the 4.3L vortech but thats just $$$ i dont have. thanks for the input camo, i guess what im really looking for is more off idle power, this engine is just missing a couple cylinders

Or, you could do the 20R head swap, with oversized valves, a cam, header, and exhaust..
That'd be a pretty decent little torque monster.

>>>*Wow, the world finally found us and real high speed internet arrived! That means I can get this website open quickly, before I could make breakfast and eat it before even the front page opened up! In some ways it's neat living in the middle of nowhere, in other ways it was a PIA..

*Anyway, I happen to know a little bit about camshafts and what they can do for you.

It's actually simple, they can open the valves sooner, open them more, and close them later, or a combination of some or all of those things.

Other than some tricks like timing everything to change the way the engine makes power, that really is pretty much it.

The little 2.4L engine was designed to be nice and smooth, get reasonable fuel economy, and be tough.

Now if we design in too much valve action, velocity in the ports drop at lower speeds and there goes the power and efficiency. We have all heard the big lumpy idle on a performance engine. What that is, is the sound of an engine that is struggling to keep running.

It the design is correct, idle quality and power can be adequate, with some airflow potential added just off idle and somewhere around the middle of the powerband. That feels good to the typical driver. By changing the timing of the opening and closing valve events, peak power can be moved up or down the RPM scale, adding what is know as "area" under the curve puts more fuel and air into the cylinder.

More fuel and air means more power potential, it really is as simple as that.

Unless doing something extreme, no one will every make a little 22R into a hot rod. But the guy or gal that has a nice mild cam upgrade will get to the top of the hill with their load of Cows before you will, and that is the plain and simple truth.

Power is a combination of many things, get any point wrong by much, such as fuel curve, timing chain, wrong exhaust, ignition timing and that cam will do just as much good for you still in the box and tucked behind the front seat.

Get it all right and you will notice the difference, just remember that in many situations, bigger is not better, just right is just right and bone stock was a tad too small.....Merry Christmas, everyone!!...*EB & Le'

I rebuilt my 80 models engine a few years ago. Put the 20R head on the 22R long block with a mid range cam and header. I live in the North GA mountains and she doesn't even breathe heavy crawling up any grade. She does however wind out at about 65mph with the 4 spd tranny. And 4low is pretty stout.
