Thats good to know!

I was in 5th last night at 50 just chugging along, I didn't want to run the engine hard after it had sat so long, has old gas and oil etc. Im definitely going to change out the shifter bushings, Ive done this a few times in my MX5 and it looks pretty strait forward! Any suggestions on viscosity for the trans, trans case and diffs? I used Lucas gear lube in my 88's diffs but its transfer uses ATF fluid, I have the Haynes manual on the Trekker, just dont have it with me here at work!

Well in my Pickup I used Lucas Gear oil in all, front and rear diff, trans and transfer case. Not sure if you can do the same but I don't see why not. I don't recall what the book calls for though. Motor Oil I run 30 or 20-50 in summer, winter I'll run 10-30. I also use the Lucas fuel treatment Seems to start a bit easier and in my Lincoln I can run 89 without it pinging.

I'd also SeaFoam it before you change the plugs and oil as well. Now I have not dumped any of that in the crank case before but I have read other that have. I have only run it through the brake booster and it does help out a bunch.

I just picked up a 5 quart jug of Castrol GTX 10w40 high mile oil, a filter and antifreeze. I stopped at autozone and picked up a set of plugs, I got NGK's for it but Im wondering when they jacked the price of their basic plugs, they are now $250 per plug, used to be .99 WTF???

I run Rotella 15W40 in both of my 22Rs year round. I like the detergent properties as well as the fact that it's one of the few oils left out there that still contains zinc, which is a GREAT lubricant for your valvetrain.

As far as the Lucas, I know alot of people SWEAR by it, but I personally don't think it's necessary as long as you run a GOOD filter and change out your fluids on a regular basis. These 22Rs are TOUGH AS NAILS if you show 'em just a little bit of periodic love. Run a good quality brand 75W90 in your diffs, tranny, and TC...synthetic is fine, but again, not all that necessary IMO.

The NGK V-Power copper core plugs are what I run as well, since I can no longer find the Denso plugs that I used to run all the time. The NGKs seem to be fine though.

83 is right about the early 80s 5 speed transmissions being a little on the weak side when it comes to bearing failure. With that said, I have 276K miles on my 82 5speed with zero problems to date, and I drive that thing like I stole it sometimes. And yeah, hit up Marlin Crawler for those nylon shifter bushings...they'll make a world of difference in your sloppy shifter.

Good luck man, and BTW, that Trekker looks GREAT!! Let me know if you ever wanna sell it! haha

If you don't go synthetic: GL 4 in the tranny. GL 4 or 5 in the t-case. GL 5 in the diffs. Make sure the breathers aren't clogged on the front & rear axle. Ect.

I just went with Toyota for plugs & wires. Seafoam through the carb & gas tank is a good idea too, like Lumpy mentioned, before doing the plugs.

Dude, that's $1000 to change your plugs! Must be extra platinum in them.

Man, great find. That thing is so cool. I just picked up an 1986 custom cab, one of the weird looking conversions from CA with the big back seat area. A friend gave me a metal utility camper top for it that "kind of" fits it. Its all coming out of paint shop this next week (I have a friend owns a paint and body shop so free paint job).

I just like the older weird vehicles. My other truck is an ex military m1008 1.25 diesel chevy 86 vintage as well that had 17,000 miles when I picked it up.

That thing is just so great looking. I like everything about it. So cool. I am envious. Thats pretty much what I'm making my custom cab into with the utility body cap.

So cool. Please keep posting progress with the work done as you go along.

i second this. i figured GL 5 in everything would be fine but now the synchro's are slow to shift into 3rd. only GL 4 in the trans is a must!

don't forget new radiator hoses all around, they will be old and start decomposing. you should also flush the system as best as you can with a cleaning agent. i didn't flush mine after i got it (it sat for about 2 years) and it ended up overheating when something kicked loose, blocked my radiator and just about took my headgasket with it. i had to go with a new radiator because once it was clogged, no amount of flushing could fix it.

Here is a link to the day 1 pictures:
http://cid-a132c6a6432774a9.skydrive...r?sa=428226866

I got the oil & filter changed, topped up the tires, cleaned out the inside, tore apart the rear hatch lock to see if I can get a key for it, removed a nest from the blower fan, "that was fun", fixed the throttle return issue and drained the cooling system. It doesn't have a drain cock on the rad which leads me to believe its not the original but I'm not really familiar with the 1st gen trucks, though a lot is similar to my 88! I was out of town all weekend and its just too freaking cold in my garage!! I need to build the deck off the back for the upstairs entrance still and haven't insulated anything out there so its pointless to run a space heater, with the 10' walls and open room above heat goes up and out! Yesterday with the windchill it was in the low 20s, my Windex and all in the garge are frozen solid!!! Now, on the good side I dont need to worry about my beer getting warm

My 83 radiator has a drain, but I don't know if the earlier models did or not.

20? That's nothing! Just kidding, it's cold, but we just finished a December where it almost never got above 10...

Sounds like some good progess so far.

Well, I couldnt figure out how to upload pics. I dont have a website and I guess I cant start new threads yet as I am a noob, but I changed my avitar to my 86 custom cab. It just came out of the paint shop and I think it came out pretty good.

Nice find and good price! Check out these sites but careful once you take the plunge it may become addicting but surely you can save that paint with a little elbow grease. Worth a shot and it will save you a bunch of money by not repainting it. On the first site, people show off some of the vehicles they have resurrected, pretty amazing stuff. Take a look
